Computer Course After 12th: Skills Accounts Jobs Need – IPA guide illustration

The most useful computer course after 12th, if you want an accounts job, is one that teaches five specific skills on real accounting data. For accounts jobs, “computer knowledge” means exactly these five. Employers look for accurate data entry, MS Excel beyond the basics, Tally Prime or BUSY, business email and Word, and comfort with the GST and income tax portals. If you are a 12th pass commerce student or a B.Com graduate in Delhi, choose computer training that teaches these on accounting data, not general computing alone.

Students often type this as “after 12th computer course” or “after 12 th computer course”; the answer is the same either way. This guide compares the main computer courses after 12th, explains what employers mean by computer skills in an accounts job advert and which course types teach them. It also covers how the choice differs after 12th and after B.Com, and how to prove your skills.

Which computer course after 12th should you choose?

Choose by the job you want. For accounts work, a Tally-with-GST course plus Advanced Excel, or a full accounting diploma, beats a general computer course; for office and data entry work, ADCA or a basic computer course is enough.

Course Duration What it teaches Best for
Basic computer course 3 months to 1 year, by modules (IPA) Computer fundamentals, MS Office, internet, some Excel and Tally Students with little computer experience
ADCA 6 months to 1 year (IPA) MS Office, Tally Prime, BUSY, typing, HTML basics Office, back-office and data entry roles
Data entry operator course 1 month to 1 year (IPA) Typing speed, MS Office, data handling Data entry jobs and the SSC typing tests
NIELIT O Level At least 1 year after 10+2 (540 learning hours at NSQF Level 4, NIELIT) IT fundamentals, office tools, programming basics A government IT certificate
Tally with GST 1 or 2 months (IPA) Ledgers, vouchers, GST invoices, reports in Tally Prime Accounts assistant and Tally operator roles
Advanced Excel 2 months (IPA) Lookups, SUMIFS, Pivot Tables, Power Query, dashboards Accounts, MIS and reporting roles
Accounting diploma (such as the 12-month ADFA) 5 to 18 months Tally, BUSY, GST and TDS returns, payroll, income tax A full accounts career

IPA runs a computer course in Delhi that combines MS Office, Excel and Tally, with placement assistance. If an accounts career is the goal, its 12-month ADFA accounting diploma covers the computer skills and the accounting work together, and comes with IPA’s placement support. For every option after Class 12, not only computer courses, see our guide to courses after 12th commerce.

What employers mean by “computer knowledge” in accounts roles

In accounts work, computer skills are judged on accuracy and speed with real business records, not on how many programs you have heard of. The national occupational standard for an Accounts Assistant, published by the BFSI Sector Skill Council on the National Qualifications Register, spells this out. It expects working knowledge of MS Excel and Word, and the ability to prepare income tax and TDS documents, including e-filing portal registration. A separate unit covers maintaining data integrity using digital tools (NQR, Accounts Assistant BSC/Q8101, v3.0, 2022).

That data-integrity unit is worth reading closely. It asks the job-holder to capture and retrieve data digitally, check it for accuracy, verify questionable entries, keep documents secure and dispose of records safely. In plain terms: an accounts assistant who types fast but posts the wrong figures, or leaves a client’s files open on a shared computer, is not doing the job.

The computer skills accounts jobs ask for

Most entry-level accounts roles draw on the same handful of skills. The table ranks them by how soon a fresher needs them.

Skill What you will be asked to do How it is usually tested Priority for freshers
Typing and data entry Enter invoices, vouchers and bank transactions without errors A timed entry task or typing test Essential
MS Excel Clean data, use lookups and SUMIFS, build pivot tables and simple reports A practical task on a sample file Essential
Tally Prime or BUSY Create ledgers, pass vouchers, raise GST invoices, pull reports Passing entries in a test company Essential for small and mid-sized firms
Email and MS Word Write payment reminders, letters and clear emails to vendors and clients A short writing task, or your application email itself Essential
Government portals Download GST data, follow the return-filing flow, use the income tax e-filing portal Questions or a walk-through in the interview Important
Bank statements and online banking Download statements and reconcile them with the books A bank reconciliation exercise Important
ERP software such as SAP Post and report in a large company’s system Usually for graduates applying to larger firms Later
Cloud accounting tools Record transactions in tools such as Zoho Books or QuickBooks Varies by employer Useful for some startups

How much Excel is enough

For an entry-level accounts role, aim to be comfortable with these without looking them up:

  • SUM, SUMIF and SUMIFS, COUNTIFS and IF.
  • VLOOKUP, or XLOOKUP in newer versions, to match invoices with payments.
  • Pivot tables to summarise sales or expenses by month, party or ledger.
  • Sorting, filters, data validation and conditional formatting to catch errors.
  • Date and text functions for cleaning exported data, and protecting a finished sheet.

If you want to go further into MIS reports and dashboards, an advanced Excel course covers those topics in more depth.

What Tally skills employers check

Employers often hand you a test company and ask you to do a small piece of real work. Be ready to create a company and put ledgers under the right groups. You should be able to pass purchase, sales, payment, receipt, contra and journal vouchers, and to set up GST and raise a tax invoice. Finish by tracking stock, reconciling a bank account and pulling a trial balance, profit and loss account and balance sheet. A Tally course with GST should cover every item on that list with practice, not demonstration.

Why government portals matter

GST-registered businesses file returns on the GST portal and income tax and TDS returns through the income tax e-filing portal. Payroll roles add the EPFO and ESIC portals. As a fresher you will not file alone, but knowing where things are and what each return contains makes you useful from the first week. Treat any employer or client login you are given as confidential; sharing it is a serious breach.

Which kind of computer course fits an accounts career

Computer courses in Delhi range from general office skills to accounting software, so match the course to the job, not the other way round. Durations vary by institute. For the institute courses, the figures shown are IPA’s published durations, given only as a reference; the CCC duration is NIELIT’s.

Course type What it covers Typical length Good for Watch out for
General computer course or ADCA Fundamentals, typing, MS Office, internet and email, often Tally 3 months to 1 year (ADCA: 6 months to 1 year) 12th pass students who have used computers very little Check that the Excel and Tally parts go deep enough for accounts work
Advanced Excel Formulas, lookups, pivot tables, MIS reporting About 2 months B.Com graduates, anyone aiming at reporting roles Teaches the tool, not accounting itself
Tally with GST Accounting software, GST invoicing and reports 1 to 2 months Students who know basic accounting Needs Excel alongside it
Accounting diploma Accounting, Tally, GST, TDS, payroll and Excel together 6 to 18 months Anyone who wants one structured route into accounts Longer commitment; read the placement terms
NIELIT CCC Basic computer concepts, with a national exam 80 hours Candidates applying for government jobs that ask for it A general computer literacy certificate, not accounting training

NIELIT’s Course on Computer Concepts runs for 80 hours and has no minimum educational qualification (NIELIT, CCC). Some government recruitment notices ask for it, so check the notice for any post you are targeting. For a structured office-computing diploma that also includes Tally and BUSY, see IPA’s ADCA course page for the modules. Where CCC, O Level and the Microsoft exams differ in length, entry rules and use, our comparison of basic computer certification courses sets them side by side.

What to check before you pick a computer institute

A good computer institute for accounts careers is one where you spend most of each session practising on accounting data. Check these before you enrol:

  • One computer per student during practicals, and a batch small enough for the trainer to check your screen.
  • Accounting practice files, such as invoices, bank statements and salary data, not only typing exercises and Word documents.
  • Current software versions: Tally Prime rather than older releases, and an Excel version with XLOOKUP.
  • Marked tests at the end of each module, so you know where you stand.
  • A certificate that lists the modules and hours, which is easier for an employer to judge than a course name.
  • A demo class before you pay, and written fee and placement terms.

Our checklist for choosing an accounting course in Delhi with placement turns these into a fuller list that works for any institute. To see how IPA measures up, read our computer training institute page.

After 12th commerce or after B.Com: what changes

The skills employers want are the same; what changes is how much ground you need to cover first.

If you are 12th pass, commerce

If you have mostly used a phone, start with typing and computer fundamentals, then move to Excel and Tally. You already know journal entries from school, so an accounting diploma that combines software with GST, TDS and payroll is often the more complete route. Our guide to diploma courses after 12th commerce compares the options by length and fee. For the wider choice between a diploma and a degree, read whether a diploma or a degree suits accounting careers.

If you are a B.Com graduate

Skip the basics. Employers will assume you know accounting theory and will test software and compliance, so go straight to Excel, Tally with GST and, if you can, TDS and payroll. A focused two to four months of practice usually matters more than a long general computer course. For how accounting courses compare by the job they lead to, read which accounting course suits the job you want.

If you are also preparing for government exams

Computer skills are tested there too. In the SSC Combined Graduate Level exam 2026, Tier II includes a Computer Knowledge Test and a Data Entry Speed Test. The speed test is about 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes, and both tests are mandatory and qualifying for all posts (SSC CGL 2026 notice). That speed is a useful benchmark for private data-entry work as well.

Build proof you can show an employer

A certificate says you attended; a small portfolio shows you can do the work. Before you start applying, prepare:

  1. A recent typing or data-entry speed result.
  2. An Excel file with a month of sample sales data, a pivot table summary and a lookup that matches invoices to payments.
  3. A Tally test company with a month of vouchers, GST invoices and a bank reconciliation.
  4. A one-page GST working showing output tax, input tax credit and net liability.

Mention these on your resume and offer to show them. Our guide to accounting jobs in Delhi for freshers explains where to apply and how the practical tests run. Once you are working, where these skills lead in an accounts career shows the next steps.

If you are comparing institutes rather than courses, our checklist on how to choose a computer training institute in Delhi lists what to ask. B.Com graduates can also read our guide to courses after B.Com.

How we teach this at IPA

In IPA’s computer course each module ends in assignments and small projects based on real office tasks, so you finish with work you can talk about in an interview. The modules cover computer basics, MS Office, advanced Excel and data handling, and email and online tools, and you can build your own mix of them.

Frequently asked questions

Which computer course is best after 12th?

It depends on the job you want. For accounts work, Tally with GST plus Advanced Excel, or an accounting diploma, is the most useful. For office and data entry work, ADCA or a basic computer course is enough, and NIELIT O Level suits students who want a government IT certificate.

Which computer course is good for accounts jobs after 12th commerce?

A course that combines Tally with GST and Excel, or an accounting diploma that adds TDS and payroll. If you have little computer experience, add typing and fundamentals first. General computer courses help only if their Excel and Tally parts are substantial.

Is ADCA useful for accounting jobs?

It helps for office, data-entry and back-office roles because it covers typing, MS Office and usually Tally. For accountant roles, employers also test GST, TDS and bank reconciliation, which need accounting-focused training.

How much Excel do I need for an accounts executive job?

Be comfortable with SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, IF, VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP, pivot tables, filters and data validation. Dashboards and macros are useful later but rarely required for entry-level roles.

Is the CCC certificate needed for private accounts jobs?

Private accounts employers seldom list it as a requirement; they usually test your Excel and Tally directly. CCC matters mainly for government posts whose recruitment notices list it, so check the specific notice.

Should I learn Tally Prime or SAP first?

Learn Tally Prime first if you are new to accounting; small and mid-sized businesses commonly use it, and it teaches the accounting cycle clearly. SAP FICO makes more sense once your basics are solid and you are targeting larger companies.
