A DCA course (Diploma in Computer Application) is a short computer diploma, usually six months to one year long, that teaches computer basics, MS Office, the internet and often desktop publishing, web pages or a little programming. There is no single national DCA. Each university, state body or institute that runs one sets its own syllabus, duration, fee and eligibility, so two DCA certificates can mean quite different things.
So instead of one “standard” answer, this guide gives you the DCA course details of three real programmes, paper by paper, with their fees and admission rules. Then it explains how a DCA differs from ADCA, PGDCA, CCC and O Level, which certificate government job notices ask for, and what to check before you pay a centre.

DCA course at a glance
DCA full form and what the course is
DCA stands for Diploma in Computer Application (some institutes write “Applications”). In scope it sits above a basic computer course and well below a degree such as BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications). It is a diploma, not a degree, so it does not count as graduation.
People usually take a DCA for one of three reasons:
- to qualify for office jobs that ask for “computer knowledge”, such as computer operator, data entry operator or office assistant;
- to meet the computer-certificate condition in a government recruitment notice;
- to get comfortable with computers after 10th or 12th before choosing a career.
Is there one DCA syllabus? Three real programmes compared
No. The clearest way to see it is to compare DCA programmes that publish their rules: one from a university in Chhattisgarh, one from a state open university in Karnataka, and one from a Kerala education centre.
| Programme | Duration | Who can join | Papers / subjects | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bilaspur Vishwavidyalaya, Chhattisgarh (syllabus effective from the 2017-18 session; the copy is hosted on a college website) | 1 year | 12th pass (10+2) with at least 40% marks | Fundamentals of Computers; Windows & PC Packages; Print Technology and Desktop Publishing; Internet and Web Technology; Programming in C; Introduction to Operating System; two labs (PC Package and DTP Lab, Programming in C Lab) | Not given in the syllabus document |
| Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), Mysuru (programme page, 2024 archive) | 1 year, 36 credits | 12th pass (10+2) or equivalent | Fundamentals of Computers and Information Technology; Office Automation; DTP (Desk Top Publishing); Internet & Web Page Designing; Office Automation Lab; DTP and HTML Lab | Not given on the programme page |
| Centre for Continuing Education Kerala (CCEK) (syllabus approved by a 2012 Kerala government order; copy published by MES College, Marampally) | 6 months | 10th pass (SSLC, Kerala’s Class 10 exam) | Informatics; MS Office and Internet; Linux and Open Office; PC Techniques; Malayalam Computing | ₹6,000 course fee and ₹300 exam fee, as listed in the syllabus document |
So one DCA is a year long and teaches C programming, another is a year of Office, DTP and HTML, and a third is six months with Linux and Malayalam computing. All three are valid uses of the name DCA. When an institute quotes “the DCA syllabus”, it means its own syllabus.
DCA syllabus paper by paper: the Bilaspur example7 topics
Of the three, Bilaspur Vishwavidyalaya publishes the most detail, unit by unit, which gives a good picture of what a one-year DCA covers (KSOU’s page lists course titles only):
- Paper I, Fundamentals of Computers: history and types of computers, parts of a computer (control unit, ALU, memory), input devices (keyboard, mouse, scanner, barcode reader), output devices (monitors, printers), and types of memory such as RAM, ROM and cache.
- Paper II, Windows & PC Packages: DOS commands and Windows (files, folders, Control Panel, installing software), MS Word (formatting, tables, headers and footers, mail merge), MS Excel (worksheets, formulas and functions, charts) and MS PowerPoint (slides and presentations).
- Paper III, Print Technology and Desktop Publishing: how printing works (inkjet, laser, offset), PageMaker (layouts, columns, master pages) and Adobe Photoshop.
- Paper IV, Internet and Web Technology: how the internet and web work, browsers and search engines, email, FTP and chat, domain names, and HTML for building web pages.
- Paper V, Programming in C: variables and data types, operators, if and switch statements, loops, arrays, strings, pointers, structures and files.
- Paper VI, Introduction to Operating System: what an operating system does, processes and scheduling, memory management and file systems.
- Two labs, named PC Package and DTP Lab and Programming in C Lab, which are meant to cover the theory papers.
To pass, a student needs 33% marks, separately in the theory papers and in the practical papers. Practical marks are split 20 for the lab record, 30 for the viva (oral questions) and 50 for program development and execution, out of 100.
The common core of a DCA syllabus6 topics
Across the three programmes, the subjects that keep coming back are:
- Computer fundamentals: parts of a computer, input and output devices, memory and storage, and basic software types.
- Operating system: Windows, and in some programmes Linux.
- Office automation: a word processor, spreadsheets and presentations (MS Office, or an open-source suite such as OpenOffice).
- Internet and email: browsing and email, and in some programmes the web and computer viruses.
- Desktop publishing or web pages: DTP software (for designing printed pages), and basic HTML.
- Practical labs: marked separately from the theory papers.
Some programmes add C programming, a database or a regional-language computing paper. If a job you want needs a particular skill, such as Tally or a typing speed, check that the syllabus actually lists it rather than trusting the course name.
What you actually practise in a DCA6 topics
The syllabi list topics rather than exercises, but the practical work covers the software above. In a good DCA you should finish having done things like:
- typing and formatting a letter in Word, then sending the same letter to a list of names with mail merge;
- making a marks sheet or expense sheet in Excel with formulas, and turning it into a chart;
- building a short PowerPoint presentation;
- laying out a pamphlet or a newsletter page in a DTP program;
- sending an email with an attachment, and making a simple web page in HTML;
- in programmes that teach C, writing and running small programs.
When you visit a centre, ask to see a few of these from a current batch. It tells you more than the brochure does.
DCA course duration and eligibility
Duration: a DCA usually runs six months to one year, because each awarding body sets its own length. Bilaspur Vishwavidyalaya’s and KSOU’s DCAs run for one year, and CCEK’s for six months. Some institutes sell shorter “fast track” versions; compare their syllabus with the papers above before you join.
Eligibility: this also depends on who awards the diploma. CCEK admits students after 10th, while the two universities ask for 12th (10+2), and Bilaspur also asks for at least 40% marks. Private institutes set their own rules; some accept 10th pass students, 12th pass students and graduates alike. Ask the institute whether there is an entrance test.
DCA course fees
There is no single DCA fee, because each university, state body or institute sets its own. Of the three programmes above, only CCEK lists one in its syllabus document: a ₹6,000 course fee and a ₹300 exam fee. The document cites its 2012 approval and carries no date of its own, so check the current fee with the centre. Bilaspur’s syllabus and KSOU’s programme page don’t give a fee.
For a related course, Odisha State Open University lists its Advance Diploma in Computer Applications (an ADCA, not a DCA, with a minimum duration of 18 months) at a programme fee of ₹9,000 on its programme page, checked on 21 October 2026.
Private institutes set their own fees, which often differ between classroom and online batches. Whatever the course, ask for the fee in writing along with what it includes: the exam fee, the certificate fee, practical hours and study material.
DCA vs ADCA vs PGDCA vs CCC vs O Level
These names get mixed up all the time. NIELIT, the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology under the Ministry of Electronics and IT, runs the CCC and O Level; the others are awarded by universities, state bodies or institutes.
| Course | Who awards it | Typical length | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| CCC (Course on Computer Concepts) | NIELIT | 80 hours (NIELIT’s skills-level table lists 90 notional hours) | Anyone who needs a basic, widely asked-for computer certificate; no minimum qualification |
| DCA (Diploma in Computer Application) | A university, state body or institute | 6 months to 1 year in the examples here | 10th or 12th pass students who want a broader computer diploma |
| ADCA (Advanced Diploma in Computer Application) | A university, state body or institute | Varies; often longer than a DCA (IPA: 6 months to 1 year; Odisha State Open University: 18 months minimum) | Students who want more modules, such as accounting software, web or database work |
| O Level (IT) | NIELIT | 540 hours, skills Level 4, exams in January and July | 12th pass students (or ITI or polytechnic routes after 10th) who want a national-level IT certificate |
| PGDCA (Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications) | Universities, such as IGNOU | 1 year (IGNOU allows up to 3) | Graduates; IGNOU also expects mathematics at 12th or graduation, or a bridge course |
Sources: NIELIT’s pages for CCC and O Level, NIELIT’s skills-level table, and IGNOU’s PGDCA programme page.
Put simply, CCC and O Level are national NIELIT certificates with NIELIT’s syllabus and exams, while a DCA or ADCA is worth as much as the body that issues it. If you’re comparing the two diplomas for yourself, our ADCA course page lists a full ADCA syllabus module by module.
NIELIT’s own qualification file (2016) records three universities that treated O Level as equivalent to a DCA in 2014: one for lateral entry (joining directly in a later semester) to the third semester of BCA, and two as a bridge course.
Is a DCA recognised?
A DCA is “recognised” only as far as the body awarding it is. In practice, recognition comes from one of these:
- A university: a DCA run by a university, such as the two above, is that university’s diploma and carries its name.
- A state government order: Kerala approved the CCEK DCA by government order GO(Ms) No. 37/2012/P&ARD of 16 July 2012 “as a qualification for appointments through Kerala PSC” (the Kerala Public Service Commission), according to its syllabus document.
- NIELIT: the CCC, O Level and NIELIT’s higher levels are national certificates.
- The National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF): this framework, revised in the NSQF 2023 notification of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, ranks qualifications from Level 1 (simplest) to Level 8 (most complex). NIELIT places the CCC at Level 2 and O Level at Level 4.
A certificate from a private computer centre is the centre’s own certificate. That’s fine for most private-sector jobs, where employers mainly test what you can do. For a government post or further study, check the exact certificate the notice or admission rule names. Our guide to basic computer certification courses compares the CCC, O Level and other short certificates in more detail.
Is a DCA useful for government jobs?
Sometimes, but read the notice. Recruitment notices name specific certificates, and they vary from post to post. Two examples from official sources (both older, so treat them as examples of how notices are worded):
- The Allahabad High Court’s 2017 recruitment notice asked for “Intermediate with CCC Certificate issued by DOEACC/NIELIT Society” for several clerical posts, plus a typing speed. (“Intermediate” is the Uttar Pradesh term for Class 12; DOEACC Society is NIELIT’s earlier name.)
- An eligibility sheet from NIELIT’s Lucknow centre (2019) listed a computer operator post as “Intermediate with Nielit CCC/Six Month Diploma in Computer Application with 20 wpm Typing Speed in HINDI & ENGLISH”.
So one notice accepted a six-month DCA as an alternative to the CCC, and the other asked for the CCC only. Read the eligibility section of the exact notice you’re applying to; notices change. Typing speed is often asked for alongside the certificate, so practise it during your course.
Jobs after a DCA
What kind of work can you get with a DCA? On its own, it prepares you for entry-level office and computer roles:
- Computer operator: typing, printing and keeping files and records on a computer. The NIELIT Lucknow sheet above (2019) accepts either the CCC or a six-month diploma in computer application for this post.
- Data entry operator: entering and checking data quickly and accurately, usually against a typing-speed test.
- Office or back-office assistant: letters, spreadsheets, email and filing.
- DTP operator: designing pamphlets, forms and printed pages, if your DCA covered DTP.
Pay for these roles depends on the employer and the city, so be careful with salary figures on course websites unless they name a source. What widens your options is a skill an employer can test, such as typing speed, Excel or accounting software. The common next steps after a DCA are an ADCA, accounting software such as Tally, NIELIT’s O Level, or a degree such as BCA. If you’re leaning towards data entry work, our data entry operator course page explains what that job involves.
DCA online: what to check first
Many DCAs are now sold online. Before you enrol, check:
- Who issues the certificate: a university, a government body, or the institute itself.
- How you’re examined: a supervised exam with practical work counts for more than a quiz the website marks by itself.
- The full syllabus: module by module, with practical hours, compared with the papers above.
- Live help: whether a trainer answers your doubts, or it’s recorded videos only.
- The total cost: course, exam and certificate fees together.
How to choose a DCA course or centre
Which computer certificate fits your goal?
Start with one question: what do you want the certificate for?
- A specific government post: get the certificate its notice names, whether that’s a CCC, an O Level or a DCA from a particular body.
- A private office job: pick the course that teaches the software the job uses, and build your typing speed.
- An accounts job: look for Excel and accounting software (Tally or BUSY) in the syllabus, not just MS Office.
For example, if a notice for a computer operator post asks for the CCC, a DCA alone won’t qualify you, however good the course is. Then compare syllabi rather than course names, ask how many hours you’ll spend at a computer, attend a demo class and see the lab if the centre is near you, and get the fee and refund terms in writing before you pay.
DCA or ADCA at IPA in Delhi
IPA (Institute of Professional Accountants) in Laxmi Nagar, Delhi, does not run a separate DCA. It teaches the ADCA, the Advanced Diploma in Computer Application, over 6 months to 1 year, in class or online. Its eight modules are computer fundamentals, typing and data entry, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), internet and email, accounting software (Tally Prime and BUSY), HTML basics, database basics, and data security. The certificate is IPA’s own; it is not a NIELIT certificate.
If you only want the basics, the basic computer course in Delhi is shorter. If you’re a commerce student, our guide to the computer course for accounts jobs after 12th explains which skills accounts employers test. For the current fee and batch timings, use Know the fees.
Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of DCA?
DCA stands for Diploma in Computer Application. It is a computer diploma that usually takes six months to one year.
What is the duration of a DCA course?
Usually six months to one year. Of the official programmes compared above, CCEK’s runs for six months, and Bilaspur Vishwavidyalaya’s and KSOU’s for one year.
Can I do a DCA after 10th?
Yes, at some places. CCEK admits students after 10th, and some private institutes do too. University DCAs such as Bilaspur’s and KSOU’s ask for 12th pass.
Which is better, DCA or ADCA?
ADCA is meant to be the more advanced of the two and is often longer, but neither name is standardised. Compare the syllabus, the duration and who issues the certificate, not just the word “advanced”.
Is DCA better than CCC for a government job?
It depends on the notice. Some notices ask only for NIELIT’s CCC; others accept a six-month DCA as an alternative. Read the eligibility section of the post you’re applying for.
What is the difference between DCA and PGDCA?
A DCA is open after 10th or 12th. A PGDCA is a postgraduate diploma for graduates; IGNOU’s runs for at least a year and covers programming in C, Python and Java, operating systems, databases and data structures.
Is an online DCA course valid?
An online DCA is as valid as the body that issues it. Check whether a university, a government body or the institute itself awards the certificate, and how the exam is conducted.
