The courses after 12th arts fall into five groups: degrees (BA and its subjects, law, teaching, media), professional exams (CA, CMA, CS and the ICMAI accounting course CAT), government exams, health courses that accept arts, and short skill courses such as Tally, GST and Excel. Arts is one of the most open streams in India. Many degrees and exams ask only for a Class 12 pass, but a few ask for subjects that arts students did not take, and this guide says which.
Every eligibility rule below comes from the official body’s own page or notice, read on 13 Oct 2026. Rules change each year, so treat this as a map and confirm with the current notice before you apply.
In short: arts does not close many doors. It closes a few specific ones (mainly MBBS, B.Sc Nursing and the Air Force and Naval wings of NDA), and this page names them.
What are the main courses after 12th arts?
After 12th arts you can follow one of four broad routes: study a degree, prepare for a professional or government exam, start a job-linked skill course, or combine two of these. The right route depends on what you want in three to five years, not on which one has the longest list of courses.
The map below groups the routes by goal. Each group is explained in its own section.
Courses after 12th arts, by goal
- BA in a subject you like
- Law (CLAT route)
- Teaching, social work, media, hotel management, design
- CA, CMA, CS
- CAT from ICMAI
- SSC CHSL
- NDA (Army Wing for arts)
- Tally, GST, Excel
- Accounting diploma
- Can run alongside a degree
Which degree courses can you do after 12th arts?
The most common degree is the BA (Bachelor of Arts). Under the UGC’s Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes (2022), section 3.2.3, a 3-year degree needs 120 credits and a 4-year honours degree needs 160 credits. A student who leaves after year 1 with 40 credits (plus a vocational course) gets a UG certificate, and after year 2 with 80 credits (plus a vocational course) a UG diploma. Early leavers can re-enter within three years and must finish within seven. Universities decide which options they offer.
A BA is open to arts students at almost every university, and also to other streams. The University of Delhi tells science-stream applicants they can choose B.A. (Hons) History, because the CUET subjects counted must be the ones you passed in Class 12 (DU UG admission FAQs 2026, file dated 17 May 2026).
Degrees are mostly chosen on two questions. Do you want to study one subject deeply? Does the course need a particular entrance test? The sections below take the main options one at a time.
BA and its subjects
A BA lets you study subjects such as History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, English, Hindi and Economics, depending on the college. A BA (Honours) goes deeper into one subject. A BA (Programme) combines several. Both are common starting points for an MA, teaching, civil services preparation, media and social-sector work.
Some honours subjects carry a subject condition. At the University of Delhi for 2026, B.A. (Hons) Economics needs Mathematics among your CUET (UG) subjects, and B.A. (Hons) Hindi needs Hindi passed in Class 12. So an arts student without Mathematics can study many BA subjects, but not every subject at every university.
Can arts students do B.Com or BBA?
Yes at many universities, but not at all of them. DU’s B.Com (Hons) needs Mathematics or Accountancy in the CUET combination for 2026, so an arts student who studied neither cannot apply for it there. State and private universities set their own rules, and BBA rules vary by college, so read the prospectus first. Our explainer on what B.Com is covers that degree and its eligibility, and the page on what BBA is does the same for BBA.
Law after 12th arts
Law is open to arts students. The Consortium of National Law Universities states that CLAT UG needs a 10+2 pass with at least 45% marks (40% for SC, ST and PwD candidates). Its page sets no stream restriction and no upper age limit.
Students appearing in Class 12 can apply and must show proof of passing at admission. Law colleges outside the CLAT system have their own tests and rules.
Teaching, social work, media, hotel management and design
These are real options, and each is entrance-led or college-led. Integrated teacher-education degrees (B.Ed), social work (BSW), journalism and mass communication, hotel management (NCHM) and design (for example NIFT) each have their own test or merit rule.
Eligibility differs by institution and sometimes by year. We have not quoted a rule for them here, because the current prospectus of the college you want is the only source that counts. Read it before you pay any form fee.
In short: degrees are the widest door after 12th arts. Check the subject condition of the exact programme and the entrance test, if any.
Which professional courses open after 12th arts?
CA, CMA and CAT are open to arts students, and the official pages we read name no stream condition for entry after Class 12. They are exam-led qualifications that take years, so they suit students who can study steadily for a long time. The route from a BA to an accounts career has its own guide, so this section only gives the entry points.
| Course | Body | Entry after Class 12 (official page) |
|---|---|---|
| CA Foundation | ICAI (Institute of Chartered Accountants of India) | Register after passing Class 10; the first Foundation attempt is after appearing in Class 12. Four papers: Accounting, Business Laws, Quantitative Aptitude, Business Economics. |
| CMA Foundation | ICMAI (Institute of Cost Accountants of India) | ICMAI lists a Class 10 pass and also 10+2 or equivalent, with provisional admission, and names no stream. Confirm with ICMAI whether Class 12 is needed to sit the exam. |
| CAT (Certificate in Accounting Technicians) | ICMAI | Passed or appearing in Class 12. |
| CS (through CSEET) | ICSI (Institute of Company Secretaries of India) | Check the current notice on icsi.edu for the CSEET rule and dates. |
ICAI’s FAQ also explains a direct entry route to CA Intermediate for graduates: at least 55% for commerce graduates and at least 60% for graduates of other subjects, which includes a BA. So an arts student can also finish a BA first and then enter CA.
CA has a maths element even if you did not take Mathematics in Class 12. Paper 3 of the Foundation, Quantitative Aptitude, covers Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and Statistics. For how CA fits the years after school, see how to become a CA after 12th. For ICMAI’s short accounting course, read the CAT course explainer.
In short: you do not need commerce to start CA, CMA or CAT. You do need a study plan you can keep for years.
Which government exams can you take after 12th arts?
The main central government exam open to a 12th pass is the SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level). The 2026 notice asks for a 12th standard pass or equivalent for Lower Division Clerk (LDC) and Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) posts, and it names no stream for them.
One exception matters to arts students. For Data Entry Operator (DEO) posts in three departments (Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution; the Staff Selection Commission itself; and the Ministry of Culture), the notice requires the 12th in the Science stream with Mathematics. Other DEO posts ask only for a 12th pass.
SSC CHSL 2026 at a glance
| Post (SSC CHSL 2026) | Pay level | Basic pay per month |
|---|---|---|
| Lower Division Clerk / Junior Secretariat Assistant | Level 2 | Rs 19,900 to Rs 63,200 |
| Data Entry Operator (DEO) and DEO Grade A | DEO: Level 4 or Level 5. Grade A: Level 4 only. | Level 4: Rs 25,500 to Rs 81,100. Level 5: Rs 29,200 to Rs 92,300. |
These are basic pay figures from the notice, and allowances are added on top. The later stage includes a typing or skill test, so regular practice on a computer helps.
What about NDA?
The National Defence Academy exam is open to arts students for one wing. The UPSC notice for NDA and Naval Academy Examination (II), 2026 says the Army Wing needs a Class 12 pass of the 10+2 pattern. The Air Force and Naval Wings (and the Indian Naval Academy 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme) need Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Candidates must be unmarried, and that notice allowed birth dates from 1 January 2008 to 1 January 2011. Candidates appearing in Class 12 could also apply. Check the latest notice on upsc.gov.in each cycle.
In short: arts is enough for SSC CHSL (with the three-department exception) and for NDA’s Army Wing. Always check the latest notice.
Can you do nursing or other health courses after 12th arts?
Mostly no. The Indian Nursing Council (INC) eligibility page (read 13 Oct 2026) sets a different rule for each nursing course. That page is headed “Revised from 2012-13 Academic year”, so check the current INC notice and your state nursing council before you apply.
- B.Sc Nursing needs Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with 45% marks in aggregate. Arts students are not eligible.
- GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) needs 10+2 with English, at least 40% in the qualifying exam and 40% in English individually. INC says “Science is preferable” but does not make PCB compulsory on that page, so an arts student with English may be eligible. State councils and colleges may add their own conditions.
- ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwife): the INC page lists 10+2 in Arts among the accepted backgrounds.
MBBS and other medical degrees are admitted through NEET-UG. NTA’s NEET-UG 2026 bulletin requires Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology and English at Class 12. An arts student who has not studied and passed these is not eligible, unless they complete them later as additional subjects. Check the current NMC and NTA notice before you plan around it.
In short: B.Sc Nursing and MBBS need science. GNM and ANM are the nursing routes to check with INC and your state council.
Which diploma and skill courses suit arts students?
Skill courses are the quickest way to become job-ready. Tally, GST and Excel are the practical accounting skills IPA teaches for accounts roles. You can start them right after Class 12 or run them alongside a BA.
A degree, a professional qualification and a skill course do different jobs. They are not rivals, and many students combine two.
Degree vs professional vs skill
If you want an accounts job, a practical route is a skill course in Tally, GST and Excel. IPA has taught these in Laxmi Nagar since 2003. Its Tally course carries placement assistance (not a job guarantee), and the local page for the Tally course in Laxmi Nagar has the details for Delhi students.
IPA’s 12-month ADFA diploma is open to 12th pass students from any stream, with or without maths, and carries a 100% job guarantee (IPA arranges interviews until you are placed, subject to your performance and IPA’s criteria). The 6-month diploma is listed for commerce students, so ask a counsellor which diploma fits an arts background.
Whichever institute you consider, ask for the syllabus, the software versions, the batch timings and what happens if you miss a class.
Which courses after 12th arts need no maths?
Many routes stay open without Mathematics. Where a maths condition exists, it is named below.
- BA (most subjects): open, except subject-specific conditions such as DU’s B.A. (Hons) Economics, which needs Mathematics in CUET (UG).
- Law (CLAT UG): no stream restriction on the Consortium’s page.
- CA, CMA and CAT: no stream or Mathematics condition on the official pages we read, but CA Foundation has a Quantitative Aptitude paper with Business Mathematics.
- SSC CHSL: open for LDC/JSA and most DEO posts, but not the three DEO posts that ask for Science with Mathematics.
- NDA Army Wing: a Class 12 pass; no Mathematics condition for that wing.
- GNM and ANM nursing: see the health section above. B.Sc Nursing is not open.
- Tally, GST and Excel at IPA: the Tally and GST courses list commerce students and graduates; Advanced Excel lists no stream condition; the 12-month ADFA diploma is open to any stream.
Accounting uses arithmetic, not advanced mathematics. If you are comfortable with percentages, ratios and basic formulas, you can learn bookkeeping and GST returns.
Are there courses after 12th arts with high salary?
No course guarantees a high salary, and we found no reliable public figure that compares starting pay across these courses, so we do not quote one. Pay depends on the role, the city, the employer and the skills you can show. Treat any page that promises a figure for a course as selling, not informing.
What the official sources do show is the pay structure of government jobs open after 12th arts. SSC’s 2026 CHSL notice lists Level 2 basic pay of Rs 19,900 to Rs 63,200 for LDC and JSA, and Level 4 or 5 for Data Entry Operators, as in the table above. These are basic pay bands, not take-home salary.
Professional qualifications such as CA can lead to higher pay over time, but they take years of study, so we do not rank courses by salary here.
Best courses after 12th arts: how do you compare and choose?
There is no single best course, only the best fit for your goal, subjects and time. Start with what you need in the next three years, not with the most popular course. The five steps below turn that into a choice.
Choose your route in five steps
- Pick a goalEarn soon, study first, or an exam-led career?
- Check subjectsDoes the course need Maths or Science?
- Read the noticeEligibility, dates and entrance test on the official page.
- Test the fitTry a sample class or free resources before paying.
- Combine if usefulA BA plus a skill course keeps both doors open.
Answer these five questions with A, B or C, then count which letter you chose most often.
- What matters most in the next three years? A: starting to earn. B: earning a degree. C: preparing for an exam.
- How do you feel about studying one subject deeply? A: I prefer practical tasks. B: I enjoy it. C: I can do it for years if the goal is clear.
- How do you feel about numbers? A: fine with everyday arithmetic. B: I prefer words and ideas. C: I like numbers and rules.
- How long can you plan for? A: I need to start earning soon. B: My family can support three years. C: I can plan for several years.
- What do you want to do? A: accounts or office work. B: teaching, law, media or the social sector. C: CA, CMA, CS or a government exam.
Mostly A: a skill course such as Tally, GST and Excel, with a BA alongside if you can manage both. Mostly B: a BA or law degree, with a skill course next to it. Mostly C: CA, CMA, CS or an SSC or NDA exam, with a degree or a job as a safety net. If your answers are mixed, combine: a BA plus a skill course is the most common mix.
Career options after 12th arts: which route leads to an accounts job?
If you want an accounts job after 12th arts, you do not need the commerce stream to start. Many fresher accounts roles involve entries in Tally, GST returns and Excel work, so check the job listing for the skills it names.
Our guide to BA students becoming accountants gives the step-by-step route, from basics to a first role to CA or CMA.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best course after 12th arts?
There is no single best course. A BA suits students who want a degree first. Law suits those who like reading and argument. A skill course suits those who want to work soon. Use the five questions above to choose.
Can arts students do CA?
Yes. ICAI lets you register for Foundation after Class 10 and take the first attempt after appearing in Class 12. Graduates of other subjects, including BA, can enter Intermediate directly with at least 60%.
Can arts students become doctors or nurses?
Not through MBBS or B.Sc Nursing, which need science subjects. GNM and ANM have different rules on the INC page, so check that page and your state nursing council.
Which government jobs can you get after 12th arts?
SSC CHSL posts (LDC, JSA and most DEO posts) and the NDA Army Wing are open. Eligibility, dates and pay are set by each year’s notice, so check the latest one.
Can I join an accounts course without commerce?
Yes for IPA’s 12-month ADFA diploma, which is open to any stream after 12th. The 6-month diploma and the Tally course are listed for commerce students, so ask a counsellor. Short courses carry placement assistance, not a job promise.
Does a skill course replace a degree?
No. A skill course shows you can do the work. A degree opens graduate-level exams and jobs. Many students do both.
