The courses after 12th fall into five routes, whatever your stream. A degree (B.Tech, MBBS, B.Sc, B.Com, BA, BBA, law and so on) takes 3 to 5.5 years and suits students who want the widest choice later. A professional qualification (CA, CMA, CS) takes about 4.5 years or more and suits students sure about accounts, costing or company law. A job-oriented diploma takes 5 to 18 months and suits students who want a job within a year. A skill or vocational course takes 1 to 6 months and adds one skill beside college. Government exams such as SSC CHSL and NDA suit students aiming for a government post straight after Class 12.
Your Class 12 subjects decide which doors are open. Physics and Maths open engineering; Physics, Chemistry and Biology open medicine; almost everything else is open to every stream. This guide gives the complete list, the subject rule for each option from the body that sets it, and a table that matches each option to a goal, so you can decide even if you are still confused.
Five routes after 12th, any stream
Courses after 12th list: every option at a glance

Two options often listed after 12th are not Class 12 options. An MBA needs a degree first, except for the five-year integrated programmes at some IIMs. CFA Institute lets you register for CFA Level I only in the later part of a bachelor’s degree. Plan them for later.
Not sure after 12th? Pick by your goal
There is no single best course after 12th. The right course fits your goal, your subjects, your time and your budget. Find the row that sounds most like you.
| Your goal or situation | Best route | Typical time | Where it leads |
|---|---|---|---|
| You want a job within a year | A 6 to 12-month job-oriented diploma (accounts, tax or computers), ideally with a degree running alongside | 6 to 12 months to job-ready | Accounts assistant, junior accountant, computer operator, billing executive |
| You want to study and earn together | A regular, evening or distance degree plus a diploma or skill course in a batch outside college hours | 3 years for the degree; earning from year 2 | A degree plus 1 to 2 years of real experience by graduation |
| You want a professional title | CA, CMA or CS (any stream), or a regulated degree such as MBBS or B.Arch if your subjects allow | About 4.5 years or more | Chartered accountant, company secretary, doctor, architect |
| You are weak in maths | BA, B.Com through Accountancy, law, CS, hotel management, design, accounting diplomas, Tally | 1 month to 5 years | Accounts, law, media, hospitality and office work; avoid B.Tech, B.Arch and BA Economics |
| You want a government job | SSC CHSL or NDA now; a degree for SSC CGL and bank exams later | One exam cycle now; 3 years plus exams for graduate posts | Clerk, data entry and officer-cadet posts now; graduate-level posts later |
| You can’t afford a long course | A distance or evening degree plus one short skill course; free SWAYAM and Skill India courses for theory | 1 to 3 months to the first skill | Entry-level office, accounts or data work while you study |
| You started CA, CS or CMA (or NEET or JEE) and stopped | Use what you studied: a B.Sc or B.Com, plus a diploma that turns it into a job skill. ICAI’s direct entry to CA Intermediate stays open after graduation | 5 to 12 months to a job | Accounts, tax, lab or IT support roles; the title can wait |
If two rows fit, start with the shorter one. A degree plus one practical skill keeps most doors open, and you can add CA, CS or CMA in your second year of college. If you stopped CA midway, our guide on what to do after CA Foundation lists the alternatives.
What your Class 12 subjects open
Most courses are open to every stream. The real limits come from three subject rules: Physics and Maths for engineering, Physics, Chemistry and Biology for medicine and nursing, and Physics, Chemistry and Maths for architecture and the NDA’s Air Force and Naval Wings.
| Your Class 12 subjects | Open to you | Closed or limited |
|---|---|---|
| Science, PCM | B.Tech (all branches), B.Arch, B.Sc, BCA, NDA (all wings), B.Pharm, plus every commerce and arts option | MBBS, BDS, B.Sc Nursing and other NEET courses |
| Science, PCB | MBBS, BDS, AYUSH degrees, B.Sc Nursing, B.Pharm, B.Sc, biotech and some other B.Tech branches, plus every commerce and arts option | B.Tech in civil, mechanical, computer science or electrical; B.Arch needs Maths |
| Science, PCMB | Both lists above | Nothing on subject grounds |
| Commerce | B.Com, BBA, BA, law, CA, CMA, CS, BCA at many universities, design, hotel management, all diplomas and skill courses | B.Tech, MBBS, B.Sc, B.Arch; NDA Air Force and Naval Wings |
| Arts | BA, law, design, journalism, hotel management, teaching, CA, CMA, CS, B.Com at some universities, all diplomas and skill courses | The same as commerce, plus B.Com (Hons) where Maths or Accountancy is required |
A Class 12 subject you didn’t take can’t usually be added later in the same board result. Some students take it through the National Institute of Open Schooling as an additional subject; check that your target college accepts it before you rely on it.
Courses after 12th science: PCM, PCB and PCMB
Science students have the longest list, because the regulated professional degrees (engineering, medicine, pharmacy, architecture) need science subjects. They also have the most competition, so plan a second option from the start.
After 12th PCM
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) sets the subject rules for engineering in its Approval Process Handbook 2024-27 (table 8.4). For B.E. or B.Tech you need at least 45% (40% for reserved categories) in the qualifying subjects taken together.
| Course | Duration | Entry | Where it leads |
|---|---|---|---|
| B.Tech in computer science, electrical or electronics | 4 years | Physics and Maths, plus one more subject from AICTE’s list (Chemistry, Computer Science, Biology and others); JEE Main, JEE Advanced for IITs, or a state test | Software, IT, electronics and power roles |
| B.Tech in civil, mechanical, chemical, aeronautical and similar | 4 years | Physics, Chemistry and Maths | Site, plant, design and manufacturing roles |
| B.Arch | 5 years | Physics and Maths plus one more listed subject (45% aggregate), and NATA or JEE Main Paper 2 | Architecture practice |
| B.Sc (Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Statistics, Computer Science) | 3 years; 4 for honours | Matching science subjects; CUET-UG at central universities | M.Sc, research, teaching (with a B.Ed), data and lab roles |
| BCA | 3 years; 4 for honours | Set by the university | Software and IT support; MCA later |
| NDA and Naval Academy | Exam, then training | PCM for the Air Force and Naval Wings | Commissioned officer |
| Polytechnic diploma (lateral entry to the second year) | 2 years | Class 12 with subjects from AICTE’s list | Junior engineer; lateral entry to B.Tech |
PCM also leaves every commerce and arts route open. Many PCM students take a B.Sc or BCA with a job skill if they miss a good engineering seat, which is a sound plan, not a fallback.
After 12th PCB
Medical and allied courses run through NEET (UG), conducted by the National Testing Agency. Under the NTA’s NEET (UG) 2026 information bulletin, you need Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology and English in Class 12, and you must be 17 by 31 December of the exam year. There is no upper age limit. NEET 2026 was held on 3 May 2026.
| Course | Duration | Entry | Where it leads |
|---|---|---|---|
| MBBS | About 5.5 years, with a one-year internship | NEET (UG) | Doctor; postgraduate specialisation later |
| BDS | About 5 years, with internship | NEET (UG) | Dentist |
| BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS (AYUSH) | About 5.5 years, with internship | NEET (UG) | Ayurveda, homoeopathy, Unani or Siddha practitioner |
| BVSc and AH (veterinary) | About 5.5 years | NEET (UG) for the 15% all-India VCI quota; state rules for the rest | Veterinary doctor |
| B.Sc Nursing | 4 years | PCB and English; NEET scores or the institute’s test | Staff nurse |
| B.Pharm | 4 years | Physics and Chemistry with Biology or Maths | Pharmacist, drug regulatory or production roles |
| Physiotherapy, medical lab technology, radiology, optometry | 3 to 4.5 years | PCB; set by the university or state | Physiotherapist, lab technologist, radiology technician |
| B.Sc (Biology, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Zoology, Botany, Agriculture) | 3 to 4 years | PCB; CUET-UG at central universities | Lab, research, quality-control and agriculture roles |
| B.Tech in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, food or agricultural engineering | 4 years | Physics and Chemistry plus Biology or Biotechnology, under AICTE table 8.4 | Biotech, pharma and food-processing plants |
That last row surprises many PCB students. AICTE’s table lets them into a few engineering branches without Maths, with bridge courses in the first semesters.
If NEET or JEE doesn’t work out
- Take a degree that keeps your subject alive: B.Sc, B.Pharm or an allied health course for PCB; B.Sc or BCA for PCM. You can still sit NEET again; it has no upper age limit.
- Add a job skill in year one: Advanced Excel, data work or an accounts diploma pays sooner than a second drop year.
- Switch fields without losing time: CA, CS, BBA, law and hotel management all accept science students.
After 12th commerce
Commerce students have the most direct route into accounts and finance work, and most degree, law and management options as well. The short version is below; our full guide to courses after 12th commerce covers every option, the without-maths rules and two three-year plans.
| Route | Examples | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Degree | B.Com, BBA, BMS, BA Economics, integrated law | 3 to 5 years |
| Professional | CA, CMA, CS, ICMAI’s CAT, ACCA | About 4.5 years or more for CA, CMA, CS |
| Job-oriented diploma | Accounting and taxation diplomas such as ADFA, BAT and DTL | 5 to 18 months |
| Skill course | Tally, GST, Advanced Excel, SAP FICO, payroll | 1 to 3 months |
For the professional titles, see how to become a CA after 12th and CA vs CMA vs CS.
After 12th arts
Arts students can join far more than a BA. Law, design, journalism, hotel management, teaching, CA, CMA and CS all accept them, and so do most diplomas. Our full guide to courses after 12th arts lists each with its entry rule, plus the government routes and courses open to arts students.
| Route | Examples | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Degree | BA in a subject you like, BA LLB, BJMC, B.Des, BFA, BSW, hotel management | 3 to 5 years |
| Teaching | D.El.Ed, the four-year integrated B.Ed (ITEP) | 2 to 4 years |
| Professional | CA, CMA, CS | Several years |
| Diploma or skill course | Accounting diplomas, computer courses, digital marketing, foreign languages | 1 month to 18 months |
Choosing BA subjects? Our list of BA subjects helps.
Job-oriented courses after 12th
Job-oriented courses after 12th teach the work an employer pays for in the first year. They suit students who want to earn soon, and they work best beside a degree rather than instead of one. The strongest ones have three things: a written syllabus tied to real software or portals, practice on live work, and an honest placement policy.
| Field | Typical length | Open to | First jobs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accounting and taxation diploma | 5 to 18 months | Any stream at most institutes | Accounts assistant, junior accountant, GST executive |
| Computer diploma (ADCA, DCA, NIELIT O Level) | 6 months to 1 year | Class 10 or 12, by course | Computer operator, office assistant |
| Data entry and back office | 1 month to 1 year | Class 10 or 12 | Data entry operator |
| Digital marketing | A few weeks to 6 months | Usually Class 12 | Social media or marketing executive |
| Graphic design and video editing | 3 to 12 months | Usually Class 12 | Junior designer, editor |
| Hotel and travel operations | 6 months to 1 year | Class 12 | Front office, travel desk |
Where IPA fits
IPA – Institute of Professional Accountants in Laxmi Nagar, Delhi (established 2003) teaches the accounts and computer rows of that table. Durations and eligibility below are from IPA’s course pages. ADFA, BAT and the 15-month and 18-month diplomas carry a 100% job guarantee: interviews until you are placed, subject to your performance and IPA’s criteria. The other courses carry placement assistance.
| Course | Duration | Who can join |
|---|---|---|
| ADFA: Advanced Diploma in Financial Accounting | 12 months (fast track available) | 12th pass, any stream |
| 15-month diploma and 18-month diploma | 15 or 18 months | 12th pass, any stream, with or without maths |
| BAT: Business Accounting and Taxation | 8 months | 12th commerce or B.Com |

Computer skills for any stream
Computer skills help in almost every job. For an office or accounts job, a basic computer course with MS Office and Excel, or a diploma such as ADCA or DCA, is enough to start. If the job you want is in accounts, IPA’s ADFA diploma teaches the computer skills along with Tally, GST and payroll. For software work, you need BCA, B.Sc Computer Science or B.Tech. Our guide to computer courses after 12th compares them, and what DCA covers explains the diploma.
Vocational courses after 12th
Vocational courses after 12th train you for one trade, often with an industry placement built in. They are recognised under the National Skills Qualification Framework, which lets you move between vocational and regular study.
- B.Voc: a three-year vocational degree run by many colleges under UGC’s scheme, mixing general study with trade skills in fields such as retail, healthcare, IT and media. You can exit early with a diploma after one year or an advanced diploma after two.
- Polytechnic lateral entry: AICTE’s handbook lets Class 12 students with listed subjects join an engineering diploma in its second year, and diploma holders can later join B.Tech in its second year.
- ITI: trade courses such as electrician, fitter and computer operator, run under the Directorate General of Training. Most take Class 10, so they suit students who want hands-on technical work quickly.
- Skill India courses: short, often free, government-funded courses under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, listed on the Skill India Digital portal. Check the training centre and certificate before you join.
- Free online theory: SWAYAM, the Ministry of Education’s platform, offers free courses with optional paid exams.
Government exams you can take with a Class 12 pass
A Class 12 pass is enough for a few central government exams. The main one is the Staff Selection Commission’s CHSL exam. The CHSL 2026 notice (published 7 September 2026) set an age limit of 18 to 27 years as on 1 August 2026, and applications closed on 7 October 2026, so watch ssc.gov.in for the next cycle.
| Exam and post | Who can apply | Pay (basic, per month) |
|---|---|---|
| SSC CHSL: Lower Division Clerk, Junior Secretariat Assistant | Class 12 pass, any stream | Level 2: ₹19,900 to ₹63,200 |
| SSC CHSL: Data Entry Operator | Class 12 pass; posts in three ministries and departments need Science with Maths | Level 4: ₹25,500 to ₹81,100, or Level 5: ₹29,200 to ₹92,300 |
| UPSC NDA and Naval Academy | Army Wing: any stream. Air Force and Naval Wings: PCM | Training, then an officer’s pay as set by the services |
| RRB NTPC (Under Graduate) | Class 12; check the current notice for the marks rule | Set in each notice |
Allowances are added on top of basic pay. Graduate-level posts such as SSC CGL accountant and auditor posts, and most bank exams, need a degree, which is a good reason to keep a degree running alongside any diploma.
Best courses after 12th with high salary: what the data says
The courses with the highest pay ceiling are the long, regulated ones: medicine, engineering from a strong college, and the professional titles CA, CS and CMA. They also take the longest and are the hardest to clear. Very few reliable sources publish starting pay, and most “salary” tables online give no source or date. These are the figures we could check.
| Route | Pay figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Newly qualified chartered accountant | Average of about ₹13.3 lakh CTC a year | ICAI 64th campus placement programme, April to May 2026 |
| SSC CHSL Data Entry Operator | ₹25,500 to ₹81,100 basic a month (Level 4) | SSC CHSL 2026 notice |
| SSC CHSL Lower Division Clerk | ₹19,900 to ₹63,200 basic a month (Level 2) | SSC CHSL 2026 notice |
| Clerical work in Delhi, non-graduate (Class 10 or 12 pass) | Legal minimum ₹22,411 a month | Delhi Labour Department order, in force from 1 April 2025 |
| Clerical work in Delhi, graduate | Legal minimum ₹24,356 a month | Delhi Labour Department order, in force from 1 April 2025 |
The Delhi minimum wage is a useful check on any private offer for office work. No course guarantees a salary: pay follows the job you reach, the college or employer, the city and your skill. Frequently asked questions
Which course is best after 12th?
No single course is best for everyone. For a job within a year, a 6 to 12-month job-oriented diploma beside a degree. For the highest ceiling, a regulated degree (MBBS, B.Tech) or a professional title (CA, CS, CMA). The “pick by your goal” table above matches each situation to a route.
Which courses after 12th are open to every stream?
BA, BBA at most universities, law, design, journalism, hotel management, CA, CMA, CS, BCA at many universities, accounting and computer diplomas, and skill courses such as Tally, Excel and digital marketing.
What can PCB students do without NEET?
B.Sc in biology subjects, B.Pharm, physiotherapy and other allied health courses at many universities, B.Tech in biotechnology or food engineering under AICTE’s rules, and every commerce and arts option, including CA and law.
Can a commerce or arts student do engineering or medicine?
Not directly. AICTE’s rules need Physics and Maths for most B.Tech branches, and NEET needs Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Some students add subjects through the National Institute of Open Schooling; confirm with the college and exam body first.
What are the job-oriented courses after 12th?
Accounting and taxation diplomas, computer diplomas such as ADCA and DCA, data entry, digital marketing, graphic design and hotel operations. They take 1 month to 18 months and lead to entry-level jobs; a degree alongside opens graduate-level posts later.
Can I do a diploma and a degree at the same time?
Yes, and many students do. Institutes run batches in different time slots, so you can attend around college hours and graduate with a skill and some experience as well as a degree.
