Accounting freshers in Delhi usually start as accounts assistants, junior accountants, accounts executives, GST or tax assistants in CA firms, payroll executives or audit assistants. The jobs cluster in Delhi’s business districts and the NCR hubs of Noida and Gurugram, and many employers decide on the strength of a practical test rather than the degree alone. The legal pay floor is set by the Delhi government: ₹24,356 a month for clerical staff who are graduates, under the order effective 1 April 2025.
This guide covers the entry-level roles, where the employers are, how to apply and how to prepare for the practical test. It then sets out the official pay figures and the government route to an Assistant Accounts Officer post.
Entry-level accounting jobs for freshers in Delhi
Most first accounting jobs involve the same core work, recording transactions, reconciling accounts and preparing tax data, in different settings. The table shows the common roles and what each tends to test.
| Role | What you do | Typical employers | What they test |

The national occupational standard for an Accounts Assistant sums up what these roles share. It lists receipts and payments, bank reconciliation, depreciation schedules, tax and payroll documents, and working knowledge of MS Excel and Word (NQR, BSC/Q8101).
Where the accounting jobs are in Delhi NCR
Accounting jobs follow business activity, so different parts of Delhi NCR tend to offer different kinds of first job. Knowing the clusters helps you target applications and walk-ins, and choose a commute you can keep up every day.
| Area | Main kinds of employers | First jobs you will commonly see |
|---|---|---|
| Okhla Industrial Area and Mohan Cooperative, south-east Delhi | Manufacturers, garment and export houses, NGOs | Accounts assistant, GST with export documentation, inventory accounting |
| Nehru Place | IT hardware traders, distributors, small offices | Billing, GST, stock accounting |
| Connaught Place, Barakhamba Road and ITO | Corporate offices, CA and law firms | Audit assistant, accounts executive |
| Laxmi Nagar, Preet Vihar and east Delhi | CA and tax practitioner offices, small businesses | GST or tax assistant, bookkeeping for several clients |
| Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Naya Bazar and Karol Bagh | Wholesale and trading firms | Tally operator, billing, receivables |
| Noida | IT and IT-enabled services, manufacturing, startups | Accounts executive, AP and AR roles |
| Gurugram (Cyber City, Udyog Vihar) | Multinational offices, shared-service centres | AP, AR and reconciliation roles; strong Excel and English expected |
| Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Sahibabad industrial areas | Manufacturing units | Inventory and cost accounting, payroll |
No official source counts accounting vacancies by area, so treat this as a map of where to look, not a ranking. Small CA firms and traders often hire through walk-ins and referrals, while shared-service centres in Gurugram and Noida tend to hire through portals and recruitment drives.
How do freshers find and apply for accounting jobs in Delhi?
Use several channels at once; relying on a single job portal narrows your options. A workable weekly routine looks like this:
- Set portal alerts on job sites and LinkedIn for “accounts executive”, “junior accountant”, “accounts assistant”, “Tally” and “GST”, filtered to your preferred areas.
- Register on the National Career Service portal, the Ministry of Labour and Employment’s free job-matching site, which also lists job fairs (ncs.gov.in).
- Walk in to CA firms and trading offices in the clusters above, with printed resumes, and be ready to take a short test on the spot.
- Consider an apprenticeship. Graduates can apply under the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS portal), and 12th pass candidates under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (apprenticeshipindia.gov.in). Both pay a stipend and give you experience to put on a resume.
- Ask for referrals from your college, seniors and your training institute’s placement cell. If you are still choosing where to train, our checklist for an accounting course in Delhi with placement shows what to verify.
One rule without exceptions: never pay anyone for a job. Genuine employers do not charge candidates, and an agency asking for an upfront “registration” or “processing” fee is a warning sign. For help presenting yourself, see our resume format for accounting freshers.
Preparing for the practical test and interview
Many employers give accounting freshers a practical task alongside the interview. Prepare for both.
The practical test
Expect some combination of these, often on the employer’s computer and against the clock:
- Passing a set of purchase, sales, payment and receipt entries in Tally, including GST.
- Preparing a bank reconciliation statement from a statement and a cash book.
- Working out a month’s GST liability after input tax credit.
- An Excel task: a lookup, a SUMIFS summary or a pivot table from raw data.
Our guide to computer courses after 12th for accounts jobs lists exactly which Excel and Tally skills to practise.
Questions to be ready for
Interviewers usually check whether you understand what an entry does, not whether you can recite a definition. Practise explaining depreciation, input tax credit, a bank reconciliation, why a trial balance might not tally, the difference between TDS and TCS, and why you chose accounting. Our accounting interview questions and answers and Tally Prime interview questions for freshers cover the common ones.
What to carry
Take several printed resumes, original and photocopied mark sheets and certificates, any course or internship certificates, an ID proof and passport-size photographs. If you have a sample Tally company or Excel file, carry it on a pen drive or be ready to show it on your phone.
Pay for accounting freshers in Delhi: the legal minimum and official benchmarks
There is no official survey of starting salaries for accountants in Delhi, and job-portal averages rarely explain how they are calculated. What the government does publish is the legal minimum, which every employer covered by Delhi’s notification must pay.
| Clerical and supervisory category | Minimum per month | Minimum per day |
|---|---|---|
| Non-matriculates | ₹20,371 | ₹784 |
| Matriculates but not graduates | ₹22,411 | ₹862 |
| Graduates and above | ₹24,356 | ₹937 |
These rates come from the Delhi Labour Department’s order dated 15 April 2025, effective 1 April 2025 (minimum wages order). It was still the latest order listed on the department’s current minimum wage page when we checked in September 2026. The department notes that tampered orders have circulated, so confirm rates on its own website rather than a forwarded PDF.
Two other official figures are useful for comparison:
- Apprenticeship stipends. The Apprenticeship (Amendment) Rules, 2025 set the minimum monthly stipend at ₹12,300 for graduate apprentices and ₹9,600 for Class 12 pass-outs (Gazette notification G.S.R. 610(E), 3 September 2025). The revision followed a Central Apprenticeship Council recommendation in May 2025 (PIB).
- CA articleship. For CA students in cities with 20 lakh or more people, ICAI’s FAQ recommends a minimum stipend of ₹5,000 a month in year one and ₹6,000 in year two (ICAI FAQs).
When you receive an offer, ask whether the figure is monthly in-hand pay or annual cost to company, and get it in an offer letter. PF and ESI deductions reduce take-home pay; once you join, you can check your PF contributions through EPFO using your UAN.
What is the Assistant Accounts Officer salary?
An Assistant Accounts Officer (AAO) recruited through the SSC Combined Graduate Level exam is paid at Pay Level 8 of the central pay matrix. That means basic pay of ₹47,600 to ₹1,51,100 a month, with central government allowances such as dearness allowance and house rent allowance on top, so take-home pay depends on the city of posting. The post sits in the Indian Audit and Accounts Department under the Comptroller and Auditor General, and it is a Group B gazetted post.
Graduates of any discipline aged 18 to 30 can apply, with age relaxation for reserved categories. CA, CMA, CS, M.Com or an MBA in finance counts as a desirable qualification. For comparison, SSC CGL’s Accountant and Auditor posts sit at Pay Level 5 (₹29,200 to ₹92,300). The details below come from the SSC CGL 2026 notice, dated 21 May 2026:
- Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer posts are in the Indian Audit and Accounts Department under the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), classed as Group B gazetted.
- They are placed at Pay Level 8, ₹47,600 to ₹1,51,100, with central government allowances on top.
- The age limit is 18 to 30 years, and the essential qualification is a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university. CA, CMA, CS, M.Com, or an MBA in finance is listed as desirable.
- Candidates shortlisted for these posts sit an extra Tier II paper, General Studies (Finance and Economics), whose Part A on finance and accounts carries 80 marks.
- During probation, recruits must pass the Subordinate Audit/Accounts Service Examination to be confirmed. Selected candidates can be posted to offices across India based on merit and preference.

Growing from your first accounting job
Your first year is for building a track record you can describe in your next interview. Aim to handle a full month-end close, a GST reconciliation and at least one quarterly TDS return by the end of it. After that, the usual next steps are senior accountant or accounts executive roles, or specialising in tax, payroll or audit. Adding SAP FICO or advanced Excel reporting opens larger employers, and CA or CMA remains an option alongside work. Our guide to which accounting course suits your job goal compares those routes.
If you have just finished Class 12, our guide to courses after 12th commerce sets out the routes into accounts work. If you are still in college or have just graduated, our guide to courses after B.Com compares the diplomas, short courses and professional routes that lead into these jobs. Our accountant salary guide shows how pay rises with experience.
If a bank or an NBFC is on your list, the banking interview questions and answers guide covers what those interviews ask. If you want the practical skills first, IPA’s 12-month ADFA diploma (Advanced Diploma in Financial Accounting) covers Tally Prime, GST and TDS returns and payroll, and comes with IPA’s placement support. Fees depend on your batch and mode.
How we teach this at IPA
At IPA’s Laxmi Nagar campus the ADFA diploma is taught by practising every topic on screen until it is routine: vouchers first, then the ledgers they change, then the return or salary sheet they feed. That is the daily flow of an accounts desk, taught in twelve months to 12th-pass students of any stream and to graduates.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum salary for an accounting fresher in Delhi?
Under the Delhi Labour Department’s order effective 1 April 2025, the minimum wage for clerical staff who are graduates is ₹24,356 a month, and ₹22,411 for matriculates who are not graduates. Confirm the current rate on labour.delhi.gov.in, as rates are revised periodically.
Which area of Delhi NCR has the most accounting jobs?
No official source counts vacancies by area. Different clusters suit different roles: CA firms around ITO, Laxmi Nagar and Connaught Place, traders in the old city markets and Nehru Place, manufacturers in Okhla, and shared-service centres in Gurugram and Noida.
Can I get an accounting job in Delhi without experience?
Yes. Accounts assistant, billing and audit assistant roles regularly take freshers. What you need is proof of practical skill, such as passing a Tally and bank reconciliation test. An apprenticeship under NATS or NAPS is another way to gain paid experience.
What is the salary of an Assistant Accounts Officer?
Assistant Accounts Officers recruited through SSC CGL in the Indian Audit and Accounts Department are at Pay Level 8, ₹47,600 to ₹1,51,100, plus allowances, according to the SSC CGL 2026 notice. Posts with similar titles in states or PSUs have their own scales.
Is a CA firm a good place for a first accounting job?
For many freshers, yes. CA firms expose you to GST, TDS, audits and several clients’ books in a short time. The pay may be modest, so weigh the learning against your financial needs.
Should I pay a placement agency to find me an accounting job?
No. Genuine employers and reputable recruiters do not charge candidates. Treat any demand for an upfront fee as a warning sign.
