MIS Course: Syllabus, Jobs and Skills Explained – IPA guide illustration

An MIS course teaches you to turn business data into reports that managers use to decide. In practice that means advanced Excel, pivot tables, lookups and dashboards, sometimes with Power BI or basic SQL. Most people take it to apply for MIS executive, reporting or data coordinator jobs.

This guide explains what an MIS course is, what its syllabus usually holds, what an MIS executive does all day, and how to start without wasting money. Software facts follow Microsoft’s own documentation, checked in October 2026.

What is an MIS course?

MIS stands for Management Information System. In a company, “the MIS” is simply the set of reports that tells managers what is happening: sales by product, stock by store, collections by customer, attendance by team. An MIS course trains you to build those reports. You learn to pull data from different sources, clean it, calculate what matters and present it so a busy manager understands it in a minute. Most of that work is done in Excel, and larger firms add Power BI or a database. The same words also name a university subject, Management Information Systems, taught in BBA and MBA programmes.

This guide covers the job-training meaning: the practical reporting course. We couldn’t find a single national syllabus for it, so what you learn depends on the institute. Always ask to see the module list before you enrol.

What is in an MIS course syllabus?

Syllabi differ, but most MIS courses are built from the same blocks. Treat this as a checklist when you compare institutes.

Module What you learn Why employers care
Excel formulas SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, IF, XLOOKUP or VLOOKUP, INDEX-MATCH, text and date functions Every report starts with these
Pivot tables Summarising thousands of rows by month, customer or product Fast answers from raw data
Power Query Importing and cleaning data, merging files, refreshing a report in one click Stops repeated copy-paste work
Charts and dashboards Charts, conditional formatting, a one-page dashboard Managers read pictures faster than tables
Data validation and protection Drop-down lists, input rules, locked cells and passwords Fewer errors in shared files
Macros and VBA basics Recording a macro, simple automation Saves time on daily reports
Power BI or SQL (optional) Modelling data and building interactive reports, or querying a database Needed in some larger companies

Microsoft describes a PivotTable as a tool to calculate, summarise and analyse data so you can see comparisons, patterns and trends. It describes Power Query as the way to connect to data, shape it and load it, with the original source left unchanged. Those two tools do most of the heavy lifting in an MIS role.

Power BI is a separate skill. Microsoft’s Power BI Data Analyst Associate certification (exam PL-300) covers preparing, modelling, visualising and analysing data, and expects you to be proficient with Power Query and DAX. It is a step beyond a basic MIS course, so treat it as the next goal rather than a starting requirement.

What does an MIS executive do all day?

An MIS executive collects data from the departments that create it, such as sales, accounts, stores, HR and operations. They check it, combine it and send out daily, weekly and monthly reports. Job adverts for the role describe this pattern again and again: data entry and cleaning, report preparation, accuracy checks and follow-ups with the teams that supply numbers.

A typical month in an accounts-heavy company looks like this:

  1. Export the sales register and outstanding list from the accounting software. In TallyPrime you can export a report to Excel from the export option, as shown in Tally’s help pages.
  2. Clean the file: remove extra spaces, fix dates and make sure numbers are real numbers.
  3. Build a pivot table of sales by customer and month, and an ageing table of unpaid invoices.
  4. Check the totals against the books, then share a one-page summary with the manager.

Accuracy is the real skill. A beautiful dashboard with a wrong total does harm, so good MIS people always tie their reports back to a source total.

What skills do you need to get an MIS job?

Employers look for a small set of things, and you can show most of them with a portfolio:

  • Excel at a working level: lookups, SUMIFS, pivot tables and charts. Our guide to Excel formulas for accountants lists the ones to practise first.
  • Clean data habits: naming files, keeping one source of truth, never typing over a formula.
  • Clear writing: a two-line note that says what changed and why.
  • Basic business sense: knowing what a sales return, stock value or outstanding balance means. Accounts knowledge helps here, and TallyPrime skills help when the data comes from Tally.
  • Reliability: reports that arrive on time, in the same format, every day.

Build two or three sample reports from practice data, for example a sales dashboard and a debtors ageing sheet. Showing them in an interview says more than a certificate.

What is the salary of an MIS executive?

There is no single official figure. We found no government dataset that reports pay for the title “MIS executive”, and pay depends on the company, the city, how strong your Excel is and whether you also know Power BI or SQL.

Be careful with any salary number quoted by a course seller. A better method is to read current job posts for the role. The government’s National Career Service portal and company career pages are good places. Note the ranges they actually advertise, and compare them with the skills they ask for. IPA does not promise a salary for any course. Our accountant salary guide explains how to read published pay data without being misled.

How do you become an MIS executive?

You do not need a special degree. Many people enter after 12th or a graduation in commerce, arts or science, then learn the tools. A sensible route:

  1. Get comfortable with basic computers, typing and Excel. If you are starting from zero, our computer course after 12th guide shows what to learn first.
  2. Learn advanced Excel: lookups, pivot tables, Power Query and dashboards.
  3. Practise on realistic data, such as a month of invoices or an attendance sheet.
  4. Add accounting software or basic SQL if your target employers use them.
  5. Apply for MIS, reporting, back-office and accounts-support roles, and keep your sample reports ready.

In Delhi, the training itself can be done in a classroom or live online. If you also want an accounts career, learning Tally alongside Excel opens both MIS and accounts roles. Our guide to accounting jobs in Delhi for freshers explains how the practical tests usually run.

How we teach this at IPA

IPA does not run a course with “MIS” in its name. Its Advanced Excel course covers the Excel core of an MIS course. It runs for 2 months, with VLOOKUP and INDEX-MATCH, IF functions, Pivot Tables, Power Query, Power Pivot, charts and dashboards, data validation, macros and VBA basics, and an Excel for finance module. Classes are in the classroom at Laxmi Nagar or in live online batches, with weekend batches for working professionals, and the course carries placement support.

SQL and Power BI are not in the course records, so we do not claim them. Mr. Deepak teaches Excel and MIS topics at IPA. If you also want accounts skills, the Tally course in Delhi teaches TallyPrime, GST and TDS, and you can read how Tally data moves into Excel in our guide above.

If you want to try the first MIS skill today, follow our step-by-step pivot table guide for accountants.

Frequently asked questions

What is the full form of MIS?

MIS stands for Management Information System. As a job, it means preparing the reports managers use to track a business.

Is an MIS course the same as an advanced Excel course?

Mostly, at entry level. The core of both is formulas, pivot tables and dashboards. An MIS course may add reporting habits, and some add Power BI or SQL.

Can a 12th pass student become an MIS executive?

Each employer sets its own eligibility, so read the job post. Strong Excel skills and accuracy help whatever your qualification.

Is coding needed for an MIS job?

Not usually at the start. Excel is the main tool. Basic VBA, SQL or Power BI help for bigger roles and are worth learning later.

Does IPA teach MIS?

IPA teaches the Excel and reporting skills in its Advanced Excel course. It does not list a separate MIS course, and it does not teach SQL or Power BI in the course records.

How long does it take to learn MIS skills?

That depends on your starting point and practice time. IPA’s Advanced Excel course is 2 months, and the learning continues on the job.
