Neither degree is better overall. B.Com suits students aiming at accounting, taxation, audit or CA, CS and CMA; BBA suits students aiming at management roles such as marketing, sales, HR and operations, often followed by an MBA. Both are undergraduate degrees of three years, or four years for honours under UGC’s framework. Starting pay depends far more on the role you enter than on the degree name.
Randstad’s 2024-25 report gives a useful guide for Delhi-NCR. Average junior-level CTC is ₹4.49 lakh in accounting and ₹5.23 lakh in taxation, against ₹4.47 lakh for HR generalists and ₹4.29 lakh to ₹5.35 lakh in sales, depending on industry. This guide compares the two degrees on subjects, professional eligibility, government jobs and pay. For accounting pay by experience level, see our accountant salary guide; if you are also weighing a diploma, read whether a diploma or a degree suits accounting careers.
What is the difference between B.Com and BBA?
B.Com and BBA are both three-year undergraduate degrees, or four years for honours, but they train you for different work. B.Com studies how money is recorded, taxed and audited: financial and cost accounting, income tax, GST, auditing and business law. BBA studies how organisations are run: management principles, marketing, human resources, organisational behaviour and strategy, often taught through case studies and projects. That difference shapes what comes next.
B.Com leads naturally to accounts, tax and audit jobs and to CA, CMA or CS, and commerce graduates get the lower 55% threshold for CA direct entry. BBA leads naturally to sales, marketing, HR and operations roles and to an MBA. Both degrees meet the condition for SSC CGL, MBA entrance tests and GST practitioner enrolment. Syllabi vary by university, so the table shows the typical emphasis rather than a fixed list:
| B.Com | BBA | |
|---|---|---|
| Core focus | Accounting, taxation, auditing, commercial law, economics | Management, marketing, HR, organisational behaviour, business strategy |
| Typical subjects | Financial and corporate accounting, cost accounting, income tax, GST, auditing, business law | Principles of management, marketing, human resource management, business communication, finance basics, entrepreneurship |
| Teaching style | Largely theory and problem-solving | Case studies, projects and presentations are common |
| Duration | 3 years; 4 years for honours under UGC’s framework | 3 years; 4 years for honours under UGC’s framework |
| Natural next step | CA, CMA, CS, M.Com, MBA (finance) or an accounts job | MBA or a management trainee, sales or HR role |
Check the actual syllabus of the university you are considering. A BBA with a finance specialisation can overlap with B.Com, and some B.Com programmes include management papers.

Which degree keeps more professional doors open?
For accounting and tax careers, B.Com keeps slightly more doors open, because some rules name commerce specifically. For management careers, the two are broadly equal. The rules that matter most:
| Route | B.Com | BBA |
|---|---|---|
| CA Intermediate by direct entry (ICAI FAQ) | Commerce graduates need 55% | Graduates outside commerce need 60%; confirm with ICAI how your BBA is classified |
| GST Practitioner enrolment (Rule 83, CGST Rules) | Eligible: commerce degree | Eligible: business administration or management degree |
| Income-tax representative, education route (Rule 252, Income-tax Rules 2026) | Eligible: degree in commerce | Not covered by this rule, which names commerce or law only |
| SSC Combined Graduate Level exam | Eligible: any bachelor’s degree | Eligible: any bachelor’s degree |
| MBA entrance exams | Eligible as a graduate | Eligible as a graduate |
One detail in the SSC CGL 2026 notice favours commerce for audit work. For Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer posts, selected candidates with a commerce degree will preferably be allocated to the commercial stream. The same applies to those with desirable qualifications such as CA, CMA, CS, M.Com or an MBA in finance.
A BBA graduate can still become a CA, through direct entry with 60% or the Foundation route. Our guide on becoming a CA after 12th explains both routes, CA vs CMA vs CS compares the three professional titles, and how to become a GST Practitioner covers GST enrolment.
B.Com vs BBA salary: what does the data show?
No major salary report breaks pay down by degree, so compare the roles each degree usually leads to. Randstad’s Annual Salary Trends Report 2024-25 gives average CTC by function for Delhi-NCR:
| Function, Delhi-NCR (₹ lakh a year) | Junior (0 to 5 yrs) | Middle (6 to 14 yrs) | Senior (15+ yrs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accounting | 4.49 | 15.17 | 27.38 |
| Taxation | 5.23 | 15.93 | 29.15 |
| Audit | 7.03 | 23.74 | 42.85 |
| HR generalist | 4.47 | 13.59 | 27.24 |
| Digital marketing | 5.32 | 16.19 | 32.45 |
| Sales, BFSI industry | 5.00 | 15.22 | 27.86 |
| Sales, FMCG and retail | 4.30 | 14.52 | 26.21 |
Three cautions apply. The figures describe functions, not degrees, and B.Com and BBA graduates work in all of them. They come from Randstad’s hiring for larger employers, so small-firm pay is often lower. And the junior band spans day one to five years, so a fresher usually starts below it.
The pattern is the useful part: entry pay is broadly similar across most of these functions, audit being the clear exception, and the spread widens with experience. The degree you choose matters less than the function you build expertise in.
Which should you choose, B.Com or BBA?
Pick the degree that matches the work you want to do every day. These questions help:
- Do you enjoy numbers, rules and detail? Accounting and tax work rewards accuracy and patience. B.Com fits.
- Are you aiming at CA, CMA or CS? B.Com subjects overlap heavily with those exams, and the direct-entry threshold is lower for commerce graduates.
- Do you want to practise tax independently? B.Com meets both the GST and income-tax education conditions; BBA meets only the GST one.
- Do you enjoy people, presentations and persuasion? Marketing, sales and HR suit BBA’s style of teaching.
- Is an MBA your real goal? Either degree works. BBA gives you a head start on management concepts; B.Com gives you a stronger base for finance specialisations.
If you are still weighing wider options after Class 12, our guide to diploma courses after 12th commerce covers practical courses you can combine with either degree.
What if you have already chosen?
Your degree is not a trap. It is possible to cross over in either direction.
A B.Com student who wants management roles can take an MBA later, or move into finance roles in business teams. A BBA student who wants accounts work can add practical skills in Tally, GST and TDS, and can still take the CA route. IPA’s 6-month accounting diploma covers those three skills for graduates of either degree. Graduates adding skills after their degree may find our guide to diploma courses after B.Com useful, since most of those options are open to BBA graduates too.
Whichever degree you hold, current practical knowledge helps in interviews. GST rates have been 5%, 18% and 40% since 22 September 2025, and TDS returns moved to Forms 138 and 140 under the Income-tax Act, 2025 from 1 April 2026. Both changes are worth knowing before any accounts interview.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better for a commerce student, B.Com or BBA?
It depends on the career you want. B.Com is the natural route to accounting, tax, audit and CA, CMA or CS. BBA is the natural route to management roles and an MBA. Neither is better in general.
Can a BBA student do CA?
Yes. A BBA graduate can register for CA Intermediate through direct entry with at least 60% marks (the threshold ICAI sets for graduates outside commerce), or take the Foundation route. Confirm with ICAI how your degree is classified.
Which pays more, B.Com or BBA?
No reliable source compares pay by degree. Randstad’s 2024-25 data for Delhi-NCR shows similar junior-level averages across accounting (₹4.49 lakh), HR (₹4.47 lakh) and sales (₹4.29 lakh to ₹5.35 lakh), with differences growing later.
Can a BBA graduate become a GST Practitioner?
Yes. Rule 83 of the CGST Rules includes graduates in business administration and business management, alongside commerce, law and banking.
Is B.Com or BBA better for an MBA?
Both are accepted, since MBA entrance exams ask for a bachelor’s degree. BBA gives a management foundation; B.Com is a stronger base if you plan to specialise in finance.
