Card for the guide: Tally vs Zoho Books vs Busy: Which Should You Learn or Use?, with an illustrated scene of three laptops and a calculator on a desk

Tally vs Zoho Books and Tally vs Busy: all three are accounting software for Indian businesses. On their own websites, all three list GST invoices, e-invoices, e-way bills and standard financial reports. The main difference is how you use them. TallyPrime and Busy are installed on a computer. Zoho describes Zoho Books as online accounting you can reach from any device.

No one of them suits everybody. The right choice depends on who you are: a student picking what to learn, a shop or trading firm, a services business or a CA practice.

Disclosure: TallyPrime is the main software IPA teaches, so we know it best.

We describe the other two using only each vendor’s own website, read on 13 October 2026. Software changes quickly, so treat this page as a snapshot and confirm before you buy.

We quote no prices. Each vendor’s pricing page is the only reliable place for them.

Which terms does this guide use?

These short definitions help if you are new to accounting software.

  • GSTIN: the 15-character GST registration number of a business.
  • HSN and SAC: codes that identify goods (HSN) and services (SAC) on a GST invoice.
  • B2B: a sale from one business to another business.
  • E-invoice: a GST invoice registered on the government’s invoice registration portal. It returns an Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and a QR code that are printed on the invoice.
  • IRP: the Invoice Registration Portal, the government system that issues the IRN.
  • E-way bill: an electronic document that must travel with goods moved above the notified value.
  • GSTR-1: the return in which a business reports its sales. GSTR-3B is the summary return used to pay tax.
  • GSTR-2A and 2B: auto-generated statements of purchases that suppliers’ returns create for you. They are used to check input tax credit.
  • LAN: a local area network, meaning computers connected inside one office.
  • Multi-branch: one business running from more than one location, often with separate stock.
  • SMART, POWER and POWER+: the names of tiers in Busy’s BUSY Magic range, from the lower SMART tier up to POWER+.

How do TallyPrime, Zoho Books and Busy differ in daily use?

The biggest practical difference is where your data lives and how you reach it. That decides how easily you can share books with a CA, work from home or check reports on a phone.

TallyPrime: installed on your computer

Tally’s buying page describes Silver (single user, single PC) and Gold (multi-user, multiple PCs) licences. Both come as rental or one-time licences. A free trial link is also listed. A separate Cloud Access option lets you open the same books from other places and devices.

Tally’s product page says your data stays safe from corruption during a network disruption, power failure or system reboot. It does not say whether the software works offline, and it does not describe backups. Our TallyPrime explainer covers what the product does, and Tally free download and Educational Mode explains how to practise without a licence.

Zoho Books: online with mobile and desktop apps

Zoho’s Zoho Books page describes accounting you can reach online from anywhere on any device. It also lists iOS and Android apps and a standalone desktop app. The same page names bank feeds from major Indian banks and customer and vendor portals. It also names roles and permissions, and an Accountant Program with a directory for finding an accountant.

This combination suits owners who want to look at figures from a phone, or to give an outside accountant access without sending files back and forth. The page does not say whether the software works offline.

Busy: desktop software with an online option

Busy Infotech offers BUSY Desktop and BUSY Online, the cloud version, as described on busy.in. Its pricing page lays out the BUSY Magic plans in tiers. START is for non-GST billing. SMART adds GST reconciliation and filing. POWER adds multiple GSTINs in one company. POWER+ lists 10 users and 150 companies.

The home page highlights inventory and warehouse tracking and auto e-invoice and e-way bill. It also lists a mobile app for reports, orders, quotations, invoices and stock checks. That feature set suits trading and distribution businesses.

In short: Tally and Busy are installed software with optional cloud access. Zoho Books is online first. None of the three pages says whether the software works offline, so ask the vendor if that matters to you.

What do e-invoicing, e-way bill and GSTR-1 mean, and do all three handle them?

Yes, on their own pages all three list GST invoicing, e-invoices and e-way bills. The terms are defined in the list above.

The rules come from law, and the software has to follow them. From 22 September 2025 the main GST rates are 5%, 18% and 40% for most goods and services. Some items stay nil-rated or special-rated. This follows the 56th GST Council recommendations (PIB, 3 September 2025). For the law underneath, read our complete GST guide.

How GST returns are prepared and filed

TallyPrime

  • Tally’s product page says you can upload GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B data from within the software.
  • You can file and sign GSTR-1, and download and auto-reconcile GSTR-2A/2B.
  • A GSTR-1 panel says “No portal, no JSON file. Upload and file directly.”
  • The page does not explain how the data is prepared inside.

Zoho Books

  • Zoho’s GST returns page says you can generate and file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B.
  • Its GSTR-1 help page says you must first enable API access for Zoho Books on the GST portal.
  • You then confirm with your PAN and an OTP sent to your registered mobile number.

Busy

  • The pricing page lists a GSTR-1 and IFF dashboard and download of all GST returns from one window.
  • It lists GST filing from the SMART plan upward.
  • The home page describes reconciliation of GSTR-1, 2A, 2B and 3B with ITC mismatch tracking.
  • That page does not say returns are filed directly.

E-invoicing and e-way bills

  • TallyPrime: Tally says it prints the IRN, acknowledgement number and QR code on the invoice. It can also generate an e-way bill with transporter and vehicle details.
  • Zoho Books: Zoho says it generates IRN-validated e-invoices for B2B sales. Its help pages describe a reconcile step, so pushing GSTR-1 does not override IRN details already on the GST portal.
  • Busy: Busy lists auto e-invoice with IRP integration. It says the IRN and QR code print on the bill automatically.

Busy’s pricing page also counts e-invoices and e-way bills together and caps them on three plans: 10,000 on SMART, 20,000 on POWER and 50,000 on POWER+.

A trader with high invoice volume should compare that cap with the monthly count before choosing a plan.

In short: all three cover GST invoicing, e-invoices and e-way bills. The checks that matter are how returns are filed and whether a volume cap applies to your plan.

What about multi-user access and several branches?

Check users and branches against the plan you would buy, because each vendor packages them differently.

  • TallyPrime: The Gold edition covers multi-user work, and Tally’s FAQ says the Multi-User License allows unlimited users on the same local network. Tally also lists a TallyPrime Server product. The product page does not mention multiple companies or branch features, so ask a Tally partner about your setup.
  • Zoho Books: The product page lists roles and permissions and customer and vendor portals. It does not give user counts or describe branch or warehouse features. It shows plans priced per organisation, so ask Zoho how several outlets would be set up.
  • Busy: On the pricing page, POWER+ lists 10 users. SMART and POWER allow additional users without a stated count. BUSY 21 Standard lists unlimited simultaneous users in the same office. BUSY 21 Enterprise lists multi-branch management and multiple GSTINs. BUSY Magic POWER lists multiple GSTINs in one company.

In short: Busy’s pages give the most detail on users, GSTINs and branches. For the other two, ask the vendor before you assume.

Can you move your data in, and where do you get help?

Switching software is easier when data can be imported and help is within reach. The vendor pages say the following, and where they say nothing we say so.

  • Zoho Books on import: Zoho says its support and partners can assist with data import.
  • Its demo form asks which accounting software you use now. The options include TallyPrime, Tally ERP, Excel, QuickBooks and Google Sheet. The page does not call this an import list, so ask Zoho which formats it can import.
  • Busy on import: a webinar titled “Import Data from Excel, Tally or Marg” promises to migrate masters and transactions to BUSY Magic. The home page does not describe the steps.
  • TallyPrime on import: the product page does not mention data import.
  • Tally support: Tally Help, WhatsApp, a phone number and email are listed, plus a Locate a Partner link.
  • Busy support: a “Live Support 24/7” link, a phone number and WhatsApp chat are listed. Free webinars and a video library are also shown.
  • Zoho support: phone support is listed Monday to Friday, 9:00AM to 7:00PM. The page also lists email, a contact form, a help centre, a community forum, webinars and videos. It does not mention live chat.

In short: Zoho and Busy mention help with moving data in; Tally’s product page does not. All three list ways to reach a person.

Which software to trial first

  1. Step 1Does your accountant or CA already use one? If yes, start there.
  2. Step 2Need to work from many places or on a phone? Trial Zoho Books, BUSY Online or TallyPrime Cloud Access.
  3. Step 3Lots of stock or counter billing? Trial TallyPrime and Busy with your own items.
  4. Step 4Student? Read current job postings for your target role and learn the software they name.
A starting point only. Always test with your own transactions in a free trial before paying.

What stays the same in all three?

The core of the work is identical whichever package you use. This matters for students and for businesses that might switch later.

  • Double-entry: every sale, purchase, receipt and payment debits one ledger and credits another.
  • Masters before entries: you create ledgers, stock items and tax settings first.
  • GST structure: rates, HSN or SAC codes, place of supply and input tax credit come from the law.
  • Reports: trial balance, profit and loss account, balance sheet, stock summary and GST registers.

Switching software: a safe order of work

  1. 1. Close a periodFinish and verify the books up to a clear date.
  2. 2. Check import optionsAsk the new vendor how your old data comes across.
  3. 3. Carry opening balancesEnter verified opening balances in the new system.
  4. 4. Run both for a monthCompare reports side by side.
  5. 5. Test one GST returnPrepare or file it before switching fully.
Our own suggested order, not a vendor procedure. Take a backup before every step.

Which is easiest to learn?

None is hard if you already understand accounting. Vendor pages do not rate ease of learning, so the rest of this paragraph is our impression, not a vendor claim. Desktop accounting packages reward practice with entry screens, and an online product may feel more familiar to someone used to web applications. The only way to know is to try each one for an hour with the same sample transactions.

For a topic order that works with any of them, see the Tally course syllabus: ledgers and groups, vouchers, inventory, GST, bank reconciliation and reports. Our step-by-step guide to learning Tally adds the practice order.

What do employers ask for?

We could not find a reliable public source that compares how often job postings ask for TallyPrime, Zoho Books or Busy, so this page makes no claim about it. Check it yourself. Search job sites for the roles you want in your city, note which software appears across ten or twenty postings and learn that one. Owners can ask the accountant or CA who will keep the books which software they already use. To see what the accounts executive job role involves, read accounts executive job role.

Which should you choose? A verdict by situation

Find your situation, then confirm with a trial. These are judgements from the vendor facts above and carry no guarantee.

Your situation Where to start Why
Job seeker or fresher The software named in current postings for your target role and city Concepts carry across all three; matching the employer saves time. Practise in TallyPrime’s free Educational Mode if postings ask for Tally
Small trader or shop Trial TallyPrime and Busy with your own items Both are installed software with inventory, e-invoice and e-way bill; Busy highlights warehouse tracking and a mobile app. Check Busy’s e-invoice volume cap
Services firm or freelancer Include Zoho Books in your trial Online access, bank feeds and roles suit invoicing with few stock items; Tally and Busy also work
CA practice The software your clients already use A practice reads many clients’ data. Zoho lists an Accountant Program for sharing access online
Several branches or remote staff Compare Zoho Books, BUSY Online and TallyPrime Cloud Access Each solves remote access differently; test with your own team

In short: follow your accountant, your employer or your workflow, in that order, and test before paying.

Where does a student start?
