A taxation course teaches you to compute and file income tax, tax deducted at source (TDS) and goods and services tax (GST). India has five kinds of taxation course and one licence, and an accounts and taxation course (also called an accounting and taxation course) is one of the five. For most 12th-commerce students and graduates who want a tax job soon, an institute diploma with hands-on portal practice is the practical pick; CA is the long route to a licence. Live online batches are available at some institutes, including IPA. IPA (Institute of Professional Accountants, E-54 Laxmi Nagar, Delhi, since 2003) teaches a 5-month tax diploma, the 8-month BAT course and a 2-month GST course.
This guide compares the routes using official pages read on 14 Oct 2026. Where a rule belongs to a regulator, we name and link it. Where something is our view, we say so.
Types of taxation course in India
The five courses are a short certificate, an institute tax diploma, an accounts and taxation diploma, a university post-graduate diploma and a professional qualification. The licence is practitioner enrolment. What separates them is who issues the paper and what that paper allows.
| Route | Length | Who can join | Issued by |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Short certificate (GST, ITR or TDS) | Weeks to months; IPA’s GST course is 2 months | Set by the provider; IPA’s GST course lists 12th pass (commerce preferred), B.Com graduates and job seekers | The training provider |
| 2. Institute tax diploma | IPA’s Diploma in Taxation Law (DTL): 5 months | 10+2 pass or graduate, any stream (IPA) | The institute, after its exam |
| 3. Accounts and taxation diploma | IPA’s BAT course: 8 months | 12th pass commerce, or B.Com (IPA) | The institute |
| 4. University post-graduate diploma in taxation laws | One year (the one we checked) | A graduate degree from a recognised university | The college, under Savitribai Phule Pune University affiliation |
| 5. Professional qualification (CA) | Depends on the exams you clear | School leavers follow ICAI’s current scheme; graduates with 55% (commerce) or 60% (other subjects) can enter at Intermediate directly | ICAI (Institute of Chartered Accountants of India) |
| Licence: practitioner enrolment | Not a course | Rule-based; see below | The tax authorities |
The IPA figures come from IPA’s own course pages. The university row is one example, the Diploma in Taxation Laws at Ness Wadia College of Commerce, Pune (read 14 Oct 2026). It is the one university diploma we checked, not a rule for all. The page lists papers on general laws affecting taxation, the Income Tax Act, GST and book-keeping and accountancy, plus a project report with viva (an oral exam), for 500 marks in aggregate; the page’s own paper list is inconsistent, so check it before relying on the split. The CA direct-entry rule is from ICAI’s FAQ. CMA and CS are sibling qualifications; our guide to CA, CMA and CS compares them.
Short certificates
A short certificate fits you if you already know accounting basics and need one skill quickly. It trains one task, such as GST returns, so check that it uses the live portal. Before paying, read our explainers on what GST is, filing an income tax return and TDS returns.
ICAI certificates are for members
Some ICAI “taxation” programmes are listed in course roundups but are meant for qualified members. ICAI’s Certificate Course on GST says only ICAI members are eligible, and its Diploma in International Taxation is open to members who register (page updated 9 May 2025). ICAI’s pages describe both as courses for ICAI members.
The licence: GST practitioner and income-tax representative
Appearing for clients before tax officers is a legal status, and no course certificate gives it. A GST Practitioner is enrolled under Rule 83 of the CGST Rules. The applicant must be a citizen of India, of sound mind, not insolvent and not convicted. The applicant must also meet one qualification condition, such as a commerce or law degree or a pass in a final examination of ICAI, ICMAI or ICSI. Enrolled practitioners must pass the examination the Commissioner notifies. Our guide on how to become a GST practitioner walks through it.
Appearing for a taxpayer before the income-tax department is governed by section 515 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, which lists who may act as an authorised representative, including legal practitioners, chartered accountants holding a certificate of practice, and persons with prescribed educational qualifications. Rule 252 prescribes those qualifications as a degree in Commerce or Law from a recognised Indian university, or an equivalent foreign degree recognised by the Association of Indian Universities. Neither provision mentions institute diplomas.
What is an accounts and taxation course, and how does it differ from a taxation-only course?
An accounts and taxation course (also called an accounting and taxation course) teaches bookkeeping and the tax returns that follow from it. You learn to record vouchers and ledgers in accounting software, then use those books to file GST, TDS and income tax returns. A taxation-only course skips the bookkeeping and starts from the figures: income, deductions, invoices and deducted tax.
The choice turns on what you can already do. If you cannot yet post a journal entry, an accounts and taxation course gives you both skills in one programme; IPA’s BAT course is built this way, with Tally Prime and BUSY alongside ITR, TDS and GST. If you already keep books or work in an accounts team, a tax-only programme such as IPA’s tax diploma avoids paying for what you know. Both are institute diplomas, which means they show that you trained, and they sit outside the degree and licence systems.
Which taxation course is best after 12th or after B.Com?
For a commerce student who wants a tax job soon, an institute diploma with live portal practice is the best fit, and for a graduate the same diploma or a university PG diploma suits depending on whether you want practice or a university credential. The table gives our view, based on the eligibility rules above. It is not a promise of any outcome.
| You are | Route to look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 12th pass, commerce | Accounts and taxation diploma, or a tax diploma after basic accounts | Both are open to 12th pass commerce at IPA |
| 12th pass, another stream | An institute tax diploma that admits your stream | IPA’s tax diploma lists 10+2 pass from any stream; the university diploma we checked needs a graduate degree |
| B.Com student | Short certificate or diploma in weekday or weekend batches | Adds job skills while the degree continues |
| Graduate | Institute tax diploma, university PG diploma, or CA by direct entry | All three admit graduates |
| Working accountant | A short course for the gap, such as GST returns | Fills the missing skill only |
There is no single best taxation course for everyone. Judge any list against the checklist near the end of this guide. More options after school are in our guide to diploma courses after 12th commerce, and for graduates in diploma courses after B.Com. A government tax post is a different path with its own exams; see how to become an income tax inspector.
What does a GST and taxation course cover?
A GST and taxation course normally covers GST (registration, invoices, monthly returns and input tax credit, which is the GST you paid on purchases that you set off against GST you collect) together with income tax and TDS. A GST-only course covers the first half. IPA’s 2-month GST course carries placement assistance.
Can you do a taxation course online, and is it as good as classroom?
Yes, you can do a taxation course online, and it can be as good as classroom if it includes live practice on the same portals, access to the trainer and the same exam. IPA’s tax diploma runs in classroom, live online and hybrid formats with the same syllabus and diploma. Online learning does not change the legal rules for practitioner enrolment.
| Format | What it is | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Live online | Scheduled classes over video | Can you ask questions live, and do you file sample returns on the portal? |
| Recorded | Pre-recorded lessons you watch any time | Is there trainer access for doubts, and how is the exam taken? |
| Hybrid | A mix of classroom and online | Is the syllabus and exam the same for both modes? |
What a taxation course should teach in 2026
A 2026 syllabus has to reflect the law as it stands, so ask which Act and which forms the lessons use. The Income Tax Department’s page on the new Act says the Income-tax Act, 2025 comes into force on 1 April 2026 and the 1961 Act is repealed from that date. It also says the Rules have been cut from 511 rules with 399 forms to 333 rules with 190 forms, and that returns for AY 2026-27 (the assessment year for income earned in FY 2025-26) use forms under the old Act (incometax.gov.in, read 14 Oct 2026).
On GST, the rates are 5% (merit), 18% (standard) and 40% (for a select few goods and services) from 22 September 2025, as announced in the GST Council press release (read 14 Oct 2026).
After the course you should be able to register a business for GST and file its monthly returns on the portal, compute a salaried person’s tax and file the return, and prepare TDS statements. If a syllabus cannot say what you will file, treat that as a warning.
Jobs after a taxation course
Typical first roles in tax are tax assistant in an accounting or CA firm, GST executive, TDS executive and accounts executive with tax duties. Job titles vary by employer, but a tax assistant generally prepares computations and returns under a senior, and a GST or TDS executive generally handles a business’s monthly filings. Pay depends on the role, city and employer, and we do not quote bands here; our guide on accountant salary in India covers the wider picture.
| Role | What you do | What a course should show you |
|---|---|---|
| Tax assistant | Prepare computations and returns under a senior | How to compute income and file a return on the portal |
| GST executive | Handle a business’s monthly GST filings | How to file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B |
| TDS executive | Prepare TDS statements | How to prepare and file a TDS statement |
How to check a taxation course before you pay
Check five things, in writing, before paying any fee. The list works for any provider, including us.
- Who issues the certificate? An institute, a university or a regulator. Ask whether it is a degree, a licence or a training certificate.
- Is there hands-on portal practice? You should file sample returns yourself as well as watching lessons.
- Is the syllabus current? It should name the Income-tax Act, 2025 and the GST rates since 22 September 2025.
- What are the placement terms? Get them in writing; “placement assistance” and a guarantee are different promises.
- Can you try a class? A demo class, a visit and the trainers’ experience say more than a brochure.
Ask for the full amount and what it covers before you commit. IPA shares fees on request, and you can know the fees for a course before you decide.
US and international taxation: not offered at IPA
IPA does not offer US or international taxation. The US route is the IRS Enrolled Agent. The IRS says an enrolled agent has earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the IRS. To become one you get a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN, an IRS registration number for tax preparers), pass all three parts of the Special Enrollment Examination (the IRS’s exam: individuals, businesses, and representation, practices and procedures) and clear a suitability check. Some former IRS employees may be exempt from the exam (IRS FAQ, page updated 27 Aug 2026). International taxation in India means ICAI’s diploma for members, described above.
Frequently asked questions
What is a taxation course?
It trains you to calculate, file and reconcile taxes, mainly income tax, TDS and GST. It ranges from a short certificate to a university diploma to CA.
What does “accounts and taxation course” mean?
It is a programme that combines bookkeeping or accounting software with tax filing. The section above explains how it differs from a taxation-only course.
Is a taxation course enough to start working in tax?
It can be enough to start in roles such as tax assistant or GST executive. Representing clients before tax officers needs enrolment as a GST Practitioner under Rule 83 or the income-tax registration, which have their own conditions.
Is there a taxation course with placement?
At IPA, the diploma courses carry a 100% job guarantee (interviews until you are placed, subject to your performance and IPA’s criteria) and the GST course carries placement assistance. Ask any provider for its terms in writing.
How long is a taxation course?
Short certificates run weeks to months, IPA’s tax diploma and BAT course are 5 and 8 months, and the university diploma we checked is one year. CA depends on the exams you clear.
Is there an exam at the end?
It depends on the provider. IPA holds an online examination at the end of its tax diploma, and the university diploma we checked has university exams at the end of each academic year. Ask any provider for the exam format.
Do I need a degree for a taxation course?
Not for every course. IPA’s tax diploma accepts 10+2 pass, while the university diploma we checked asks for a graduate degree. Check each provider’s eligibility.
