Service Tax in India

Service tax is a tax levied by the government on service providers on certain service transactions, but is by the customers or those who are enjoying the services provided by professionals and other service providers Service Tax as indirect tax was introduced in 1994 as 5% and till 2003 it was levied with the same rate at few services and gradually rate was increased to 8% and on September 2004 it was again raised to 10% on value of all taxable services provided in India except the negative list, however service tax rate became 12% by finance act 2006 along with new cess and higher education cess (total 3%)
